U.S. Open Cup |
LUDLOW, Mass. - The Richmond Kickers used a late goal to advance to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 win over USL2 rival Western Mass. last night.
Kickers defender Kelvin Jones opened the scoring in the 60th minute, but the Pioneers' leading scorer, Jeff Deren, tied it minutes later.
Richmond went back on top for good when Stanley Nyazamba scored in the 86th minute. Shortly after, a flurry of red cards ensued when Kickers forward Pat Viray and Western Mass midfielder Anthony Augustine were simultaneously ejected, followed by sendoffs for Pioneers defender Federico Molinari and goalkeeper Matt Glaeser, all within the final three minutes of regulation.
In the next round, the Kickers will meet the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer on Tuesday at New Britain, Conn.

NOTES: It was the third meeting of the season between these clubs. Richmond won 3-0 at UR Stadium in the season opener, then edged the Pioneers 1-0 on the road. . . . The Kickers won the Open Cup in 1995 and have reached the quarterfinals four times. . . . Richmond (5-4-1) has a pair of USL2 games before its next U.S. Open Cup match. The Kickers play at Cleveland on Saturday and at Pittsburgh on Sunday. . . . The Kickers aren't home again until July 12 against Pittsburgh.
