WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- For the second consecutive night, the Richmond Renegades had to work overtime.
After losing to Knoxville on Friday night in Richmond, the Renegades pulled out a victory in the extra session last night, edging Twin City 4-3 on Justin Joy's goal with 6 seconds left.
With the victory, Richmond (26-20-3) moved one point ahead of Fayetteville (23-18-8) into third place in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings.
Each team has three games remaining, and two of them are against each other. Fayetteville visits Richmond on Wednesday, and the Renegades go to Fayetteville on Friday.
The two teams likely will meet each other in the first round of the playoffs, and the one that finishes in third place will have home ice for the best-ofthree series.
In last night's back-and-forth affair, Richmond took a 3-2 lead on Nathan Oke's power-play goal with just under six minutes to go. But the Cyclones, just as they had done all night, came back with the equalizer by Alex Hager at 15:13.
Richmond, which is 5-1-1 in its past seven games, outshot the Cyclones 11-4 in the opening period but had to settle for a 1-1 deadlock.
Dennis Sicard, with assists from Joy and Dan Hickman, got the Renegades on the board at 11:26, only to have Twin City answer with a minute to go on a goal by Daryl Moore.
Donald Melnyk's 21st goal of the season -- off a feed from Andre Gill -- gave Richmond a 2-1 edge with 5:24 left in the second, but former Renegade Brady Heintz scored unassisted less than a minute later to tie it.
