Coaching hockey can be hazardous to your health - especially if you go one-on-one with one of your players.
Richmond coach Brian Goudie caught a skate and fell backward to the ice during a drill with Martin Kloucek near the end of practice yesterday at the Coliseum. He hit the back of his head and lay there for a while before leaving the ice under his own power.
After being examined by the Renegades' trainer, Goudie was taken to VCU Medical Center on a stretcher by an emergency crew.
Goudie underwent a series of tests, including a CAT scan, before being sent home for the evening.
"He's got a hellacious headache," said Allan B. Harvie Jr., the team's president and general manager. "But they didn't see anything abnormal on the CAT scan or the MRI, so they released him. He's got to do a follow-up with a neurologist, but he's OK right now."
Harvie said he expected Goudie to be behind the bench tonight when the Renegades seek to extend their Southern Professional Hockey League record winning streak to 13 against Fayetteville at the Coliseum. Faceoff is 7:35 p.m.
"Unless something happens overnight, he should be back in the saddle [tonight]," Harvie said.
According to Harvie, Goudie will be wearing a helmet from now on in practice.
