The Richmond Kickers will open their 15th anniversary season at home on April 19, then hit the road for the next three games, according to the United Soccer Leagues Second Division schedule released yesterday.
Richmond, which won the USL2 title in 2006 and was runner-up last year, plays Western Mass in the opener at University of Richmond Stadium. The Kickers aren't home again until May 24 vs. Charlotte.
As has been the case since they dropped from USL1 to USL2 in 2006, the Kickers will play 20 games, including a pair with newcomers Real Maryland FC and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, who are returning after a one-year hiatus.
While Richmond plays five of its first eight on the road, the Kickers have five of their last six at UR Stadium. All but one of Richmond's 10 home games will be on a Saturday night.
The top six clubs will qualify for the playoffs this season, rather than the top four of the previous two years. The championship match is scheduled for Aug. 23. -John Packett
