Girls: Rachel Butler, Lee-Davis
Track and field is all about peaking in championship competition. Rachel Butler, Lee-Davis' multi-event phenomenon with the funky knee-high argyles, did so with aplomb this spring. She won five events (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, high jump, long jump, and triple jump) and finished a close second in the 200 at the Central Region meet. Her 58 points propelled the Confederates to the team title. A week later in the Group AAA championship, she won the triple jump and took a second (300 hurdles), third (long jump), two fourths (jump and 100 hurdles), and a sixth (200). Her 37 points outscored all but the top two teams. In the last two weeks of her career, the University of Nebraska-bound Butler recorded personal bests in the triple jump (40-10), long jump (19-0), 300 hurdles (42.81) and high jump (5-7). "Rachel's a competitor," said L-D coach Neil Mathews. "When the stakes get higher, she turns up her focus and performance that much more."Boys: Adams Abdulrazaaq, Highland Sp.
Primarily a sprinter and jumper a year ago, Adams Abdulrazaaq added the hurdles to his repertoire this past winter. The results were magnificent. This spring, the 6-1, 180-pound senior won the Central Region title in both the 110 hurdles (14.04, fastest time in the state) and 300 hurdles (38.51, second fastest). The next week, he captured the Group AAA title at 110 meters (14.28). Seeded first in the longer event at states, he hit the second hurdle and fell to the track, gamely scrambled to his feet, and still placed eighth in a respectable 40.90. Abdulrazaaq, who attempted eight different events at various times during the season, will compete next for the University of Virginia. "Adams has speed and flexibility," said Springers' coach Kerry Gray. "He's inquisitive and doesn't mind picking people's brains to learn more about his events. He's intelligent and hungry and pays the price to be successful."
