Lots of talent. Lots of locks.

Recent Petersburg High graduate Ibn Rassoull is an attention grabber, as much for his below shoulder-length dreadlocks as for his fluid skill set.

"They know who I am," Rassoull said.

Tuesday at 8:30 p.m., the 6-3, 210-pound left-hander will suit up for the East in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game at Hampton Coliseum.

Coaching the East will be one of Rassoull's Central District rivals, Prince George coach Billy Russell.

"He was always a difference maker -- the X factor -- against us," Russell said. "He's a unique player in that he can break the press with his ballhandling or crash the boards."

Rassoull, who enjoys scripting poetry, will be joined in the East roster by Prince George's 6-7 Andre Williamson, who is headed to Appalachian State.

Shining numbers: Rassoull is one who can fill just about every column on the statistics summary.

In spurring the Wave to a second straight state Group AAA playoff appearance, Rassoull averaged 13.2 points, 5.7 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocked shots.

"On a lot of other teams, Ibn would have averaged 20-plus," Petersburg coach William Lawson III said. "He gave up lot for the team."

Here's Rassoull self-description: "I try and make them guard me honest. If they come up on me, I'll blow past. If they stay back, I'll shoot it."

Transfer: Rassoull moved to an uncle's house in Petersburg in 10th grade after growing up in New Jersey. He arrived with an aggressive, street-tough game and his signature hairdo.

"A lot of guys from my neighborhood in New Jersey wear their hair like that," he said. "I just brought it with me to Virginia."

Rassoull also played tight end for the football squad.

Plans: Rassoull bills the all-star game as "another chance for exposure, and something I'm proud of -- to be picked."

After Tuesday, things remain fuzzy.

College recruitment "hasn't been what we hoped for," Lawson said. "But he's had the 2.0 [grade-point average] all along, and he's a great kid."

Possibilities include Virginia State and Frederick (Md.) Community College.

Whatever college lands Rassoull will be getting an athlete with a pass first, shoot second mentality. He had 17 points and nine assists in Petersburg's loss to John Marshall in the Central Region final. He added 16 points and five assists in the state quarterfinal win over Booker T. Washington.

"Everyone wants to be the scorer," he said. "Since others don't like passing, that's what I do. I'll give it up to everyone else."
