Mills Godwin's sweep of the Central Region boys and girls tennis titles didn't come easily. Half of it, at least, didn't come easily.

Both of Godwin's boys doubles teams -- Kyle Parker-Kevin Calhoun and Nathan Wood-Michael Baxter -- posted straight-set victories yesterday to lift the Eagles 5-3 victory over Deep Run in a taut regional final at Raintree.

Godwin's girls experienced no such suspense. They romped to a 5-0 victory over Douglas Freeman.

Deep Run's No. 3 singles player, Evan Charles, fought off several match points to earn a grueling 6-2, 2-6, 7-6, (7-3) triumph over Godwin's Edgar Vitkovski. That result tied the match at 3 at the conclusion of the singles competition.

The Eagles did not lose a set in doubles. Parker and Calhoun posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Eric Shulman and Glenn Diersen. Wood and Baxter tamed Jake Fratkin and Phillip Mosberg 6-3, 6-4.

Both teams will participate in the state tournament. Mills Godwin will play host to the Northwest Region runner-up on May 27. Deep Run will travel to the Northwest Region champion.

GIRLS

Godwin frolicks past Freeman

Mills Godwin defended its Central Region title and preserved its undefeated season, sweeping the first five matches against Douglas Freeman yesterday at James River High School.

So dominant were the Eagles that no Mills Godwin player lost a set. Only two lost as many as four games.

Godwin, the reigning Group AAA champion, is 19-0 this season and has won nine consecutive regional titles. Both teams advance to the state tournament. On May 27 Godwin plays host to the Northwest Region runner-up, while Douglas Free man (16-3) faces the Northwest champion on the road.
