Castaway Sporting Goods, (804) 706-9100, reports Kevin Wheeler (Richmond) caught a 30-pound blue cat in the Appomattox River. Amy Nunnelley (Chesterfield) caught a 38.6-pound blue cat in the Dutch Gap area. Lots of crappie are being taken on minnows, with many anglers taking 25-30 per outing. Bass fishing is up, too. Crank baits are working best on main river jetties.
The TBF Reel Casting Kids competition will take place tomorrow at Castaway from 9 a.m.-noon for ages 8-11 and 12-14. There is no charge. The next bass tournament is June 28 at Riverview Park on Route 5 at the mouth of the Chickahominy River. A 120-boat field is expected. On June 29 at Small Boat Harbor, 1-5 p.m., fishermen will take kids fishing to raise money for Special Olympics. To get involved, call Jimmy Armes at 389-1130.
On Saturday, Stephen Miklandric (Chesterfield) caught a blue catfish citation that went 41.25 inches and weighed 37 pounds, 6 ounces. The fish was caught on the James River in the Dutch Gap area. Randy Campbell (Midlothian) caught two blue catfish, weighing 31.7 and 27.1 pounds.
Region 3 of the Virginia Bass Chapter Federation tournament results from Osborne Landing, Saturday, six-fish limit: 1. Jon Dodson-Scott Mozingo six fish, 13.19 pounds; 2. Jimmy Armes-Charles Cline six fish, 12.91; 3. Bill Harrington-Dave Menard six fish, 12.78; 4. Justin Dodson-Jason Dodson six fish, 12.07. Big fish, Carl Kelty-Scott Graves 4.46 pounds.
CHICKAHOMINY LAKE/RIVER
Capt. Art Conway of Conway's River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen's Boats and Bait reports lake water temperatures in the mid 80s to low 90s last weekend and the level was slightly below full pool. Small to medium crappie were scattered in the major creek mouths, primarily over weed beds with bluegill, shellcrackers, white perch and yellow perch. Pickerel and bass were up creeks. Wright Bait Co. 1and 2-inch curly tail grubs, Kalin's crappie scrubs, small swim baits, live worms and minnows were the most effective baits. Bruce King caught 61 bluegill, Hollis Pruitt caught 53 bluegill and J.P. Whiteside and Nancy Stitt caught 18 bluegill, a crappie, yellow perch and bass on fly rods.
Jill O'Brien-Jones at Eagles Landing reports the water level is down 6 inches with temperatures between 87 and 93 degrees. The water is stained. Bream and shellcrackers are active with Glen and Lucy Fuzy catching 70.
Mid-week Individual Bass results for June 12: 1. Kevin Whitehurst four fish, 12.02 pounds, big fish of 6.24 pounds, 22 inches, citation length; 2. Garrett Geouge five fish, 11.60; 3. Stephen McMillan five fish, 9.95; 4. Casey Woodfin four fish, 9.94.
Team BASS results, Saturday: 1. Stephen McMillan-Gary Valenti five fish, 15.31 pounds; 2. Kenneth Sweeney Sr.-Kenneth Sweeney Jr. five fish, 12.03; 3. Robert Walton, Jr. five fish, 11.99; big fish: McMillan 5.81 pounds. Other catches: Casey Woodfin 5.39, Anthony Trimyer 3.39, John Sprouse 3.54. Walton's basket included a 3.97 bass all in the tournament. The next night tourney is Saturday and Sunday from 11 p.m.-7 a.m.
Riverside Campgrounds on Chickahominy River reports Mike and P.J. Buchanan (Richmond) caught 31 bass with the largest at 3 pounds on top water in Richmond with 6-inch plastic worms; Chris Battle (Petersburg) caught 20 catfish (four more than 5 pounds) with worms; Steve Barnett (Newport News) 17 bass to 4 pounds on top water with popping frogs.
LAKE CHESDIN
Lindsey at Whipperknot Marina reports the following catch: Mike Abernathy (Chesterfield) largemouth bass, 6 pounds, 4 ounces. Results from the Thursday night miniseries tournament on June 12: 1. Knuck-Cathy Crowder 18.5 pounds; 2. Floyd-Hunter Crowder 14.78; 3. Danny Ashton-Burley Langford 11.88; 4. Richard Owen-Greg Lockhart 11.83.
LITTLE CREEK RESERVOIR
Walter Elliott reports the following catches: Mike Fowler (Williamsburg) nine stripers to 10 pounds, live herring; Craig Eckenrode (James City County) eight stripers to 10.8 pounds, live herring; John and Paul Robertson (Richmond) two stripers, 9 and 10 lbs, largemouth bass 4.8, live herring; Willie Weber (New Kent County) four stripers to 15.8, live herring; Keith Williams (Mechanicsville) four stripers to 10, live herring.
CHESAPEAKE BAY/OCEAN
Dr. Julie Ball reports boats are returning from the shoals with cobia trophies to 90 pounds. Red drum are available along Fisherman's Island and the Nine Foot shoal. Casters are getting to surfacing schools on Nautilus Shoal this week. Most of the black drum hookups are coming from the four artificial islands of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, where casters are picking at fish on bucktails and Storm Lures.
Spadefish action is hit and miss around the Chesapeake Light Tower, the Cell and the 3rd and 4th islands of the CBB-T. A 13-pound, 4-ounce spade was boated at the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel by accident on 15-pound test. The fish underwent processing for consideration as a line class world record, but a concern with the rig likely will foil approval from the IGFA.
Spanish mackerel are making a great showing along the ocean front to the middle bay areas. Deep dropping Canyon edges is giving up good numbers of tilefish and grouper. Seabass are available on structures from about 30 miles out, and on deeper wrecks.
Virginia boats east of the Cigar are finding great catches of gaffer dolphin of more than 30 pounds. Greg Herman of Chesapeake boated a 26.5-pound bull dolphin from the same area.

OUTER BANKS
Leonard Nuchols reports fishing is scattered because most of the prime fishing areas closed. Ramp 43 reports pompano, cobia, blues, flounder, big rays and a few Spanish mackerel in the evening along with one 8-pound spade fish. The yellow/pink/green Glass Minnow has been getting good results in late evenings in low light and cloudy water. Steve Groves caught a 3.1-pound, 26-inch Spanish mackerel Monday using a lure. Jeff Golding (Williamsburg) caught two citation cobia within a six-day period. Golding's catches were 55 and 74 pounds.
Hatteras Village beaches report catches of flounder, blues, Spanish mackerel, sea mullet and pompano. Kayakers and boaters in the Pamlico Sound report puppy drum and speckled trout to 6 pounds caught with the Berkley's Gulp! Shrimp Alive white swimming mullet and good numbers of flounder with the Berkley's Gulp! Shrimp Alive Pearl White.
Ocracoke Island reports catches of sea mullet, blues, pompano, flounder, puppy drum and a 47-inch citation red drum, which was released by Justin Francis . The northern beaches report sea mullet, pompano, speckled trout, blues, small black tip sharks, small flounder, cobia and Spanish mackerel at Ramp 23. The southern beaches report blues, sea mullet, Spanish mackerel, pompano and flounder.
Offshore boats out of Hatteras Inlet report catches of dolphin, king mackerel, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and barracuda along with releases of white marlin, blue marlin and sailfish. The inshore boats report blues, cobia, big drum, speckled trout, flounder and good catches of Spanish mackerel. Offshore boats out of Oregon Inlet report yellowfin tuna, dolphin and big eye tuna along with releases of white marlin, blue marlin and sailfish. The inshore boats report catches of blues, cobia, speckled trout, flounder, big drum, jack crevelle, amberjacks and good catches of Spanish mackerel.
ELSEWHERE . . .
Jerry Bryant and Theresa Chieffo (Crewe) caught stripers between 15 and 19 pounds June 9 at Smith Mountain Lake, fishing with Capt. Kathy of Spike's Prime Time Fishing. Bryant caught a 37-inch citation striper.
David Parker (Hartsville) caught a 25-inch, 5-pound speckled trout on a flyrod with a top water lure in Mobjack Bay on Saturday.
Billy Anderson (Richmond), fishing on 9 foot shoals off high rise of ocean side, caught and released nine red drum measuring 43-49 inches June 12. The biggest fish was 49 inches, approximately 47 pounds.
David Price (Richmond) caught a 47-pound blue catfish while fishing with a red fin seeking stripers.
K eith Workman (Glen Allen) caught an 11.1-pound citation spadefish Saturday at the Cell using clams during the Reedville Bluefish/Rockfish Derby.
