At the opening bell tomorrow morning, the Orvis store in the Short Pump Mall will kick off its Spring Orvis Days celebration. Orvis Days runs the entire week, but tomorrow local conservation efforts will be the focus, including stewardship of the James River and protecting our watersheds from invasive species.
The event will run all day and will include a benefit for the James River Association, with 5 percent of pretax sales of Insect Shield Items contributed. There will be talks by Bill Street, Jr., executive director of the JRA (noon); John Ross, author and president of the Virginia Council of Trout Unlimited (1 p.m.); and Andrew Stiles, president of the Richmond chapter of Trout Unlimited (2 p.m.).

Sunday: Montrail is teaming up with Blue Ridge Mountain Sports to bring the national "Run Like a Girl" series to Richmond. At 9 a.m. 1,000 women will lace up the running shoes for a trail 8K in Chesterfield's Pocahontas State Park, followed by an afternoon of festivities. No bicycles, dogs, baby joggers or men are allowed. The entry fee is $30. Four of those dollars will be donated to the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation. Information: www.montrail.com/runlikeagirl. May 10: The Piedmont Division of the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League will visit Lake Gaston in Bracy for the third of five regular-season events. As many as 200 boaters and 200 co-anglers are expected to compete in the tournament, which will award as much as $45,000 in cash, including a top award of $6,000 in the Boater Division. Anglers may register for the tournament online at FLWOutdoors.com or by calling (270) 252-1000. Onsite registration will be held May 9 from 4-7 p.m. at the Wal-Mart store located at 315 Furr St. in South Hill. Entry fees are $200 for boaters and $100 for co-anglers. Americamps Lake Gaston in Bracy will host the takeoff and weigh-in at 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
