WOOD'S WINNERS

Seventh race - The $60,000 Kittens Joy Stakes kicks off an all stakes Pick-3. No. 7 Ballast is the 4-5 favorite in what appears to be a very competitive field, but when you look at his $400,000 turf earnings bankroll, he seems to stand out. He has not raced since December 1 of last year, so that is a big issue to consider. No. 6 Bastille closes well, is stakes tested for sure, but is 0 for 10 over the past two years. Trainer Jim Murphy has already won a pair of $60,000 stakes here this summer and this horse gives him a shot at three. No. 1 Midwatch is the oldest horse in here and he has a dozen starts over Colonial's turf course. He has had wild success on that surface and should get a top three finish. No. 7 shakes the rust off and wins.

Eighth race - No. 10 I Lost My Choo is 4 for 6 this year with a pair of thirds to boot, and is favored to win the $200,000 Virginia Oaks, which is graded for the first time this year. Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado gets the mount for a fifth straight time on this filly and she will be in the chase as they near the wire. No. 9 Cherokee Queen has had a promising start to her career with a two wins and a tight runner-up finish in three starts. There's no telling what her potential could be. No. 8 Born To Be's only turf dud came in a 1¼ mile race. The Oaks is a furlong shorter and with a battery of Mike Matz and Alan Garcia, she could be an upset play. No. 10 keeps her choo.

Ninth race - The biggest question in the $750,000 Virginia Derby is if favorite Sailor's Cap can race as effectively on a firm turf course in sunshine as he can on a soft or yielding grass course in the rain. The colt dominated the $600,000 Colonial Turf Cup here four weeks ago in a driving rainstorm. Belmont Stakes winning jockey Alan Garcia is back to ride again. No. 4 Court Vision didn't get a fair shake in the rain four weeks ago and has a great chance to regain his form of 2007. No. 2 Old Man Buck has been cruising on turf and is fresh off a nice third in a Grade II stakes at Churchill. No. 7 Gio Ponti is the second choice and has the tools to take this race outright. He might be the best in the field. Lets go for the upset with No. 4 to win.
