Two years ago, Damian Sancilio was the toast of the Davenport City Tennis Championships, winning the men's singles title at 42.
Now, he's a couple of years older and has much less time to devote to playing the game competitively. It showed when the No. 3 seed was bounced out of the annual tournament by Phil Thacker 6-2, 6-2 yesterday at Byrd Park.
Thacker, one of five players co-seeded ninth in the field of 50, outslugged Sancilio from the baseline and never let him get into the match.
"Two years ago, it was different," said Sancilio, director of tennis at Courtside West. "Miles [Sheldon] had come into town, and we were practicing together all the time. I had one child, and my wife could watch him. Now we have two, so there's no time. I'm coaching a lot of kids in the mornings. I'm just not playing a bit any more. I just entered it on a lark.
"But he played great. He was just smacking everything, and I couldn't handle the pace. I felt a little slow on everything."
Thacker, the head pro at Raintree Swim and Racquet Club, drilled a number of winners down the lines and into the corners while forcing the two-time champion into a slew of unforced errors.
"I just went out there and tried to play my best and things turned out pretty well," Thacker said. "I had to do that to beat Damian. I think his first serve was maybe missing a little bit, but he played pretty strongly.
"I had never played him in doubles or singles, but I knew he liked to rush the net, serve and volley a little bit. So I tried to take that into mind. Take his serve a little earlier, so he didn't have as much time to get in."
With one exception, the rest of the higher seeded men joined Thacker in the quarterfinals, which are scheduled for tomorrow at 5 p.m. Fourth-seeded Cris Robinson had withdrawn in the previous round because of an illness to a close friend.
The women's draw reached the semifinal stage with no upsets. Third-seeded and former champion Lindsey Wyeth was the only one of the top four who was pushed, outlasting Allison Shulman 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in 2½-hour quarterfinal. The women's semis are set for tomorrow at 5.
In case of rain, matches will be moved indoors at several locations.
