The last time Carl Clark and Sean Steinour were both in the men's singles field of the Davenport City Tennis Championships, they met in a hotly contested final nine years ago.

Clark, head pro at the Country Club of Virginia, edged Steinour, director of racket sports at Westwood, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in that 1999 showdown.

The duo, now older and presumably wiser, could meet again this year in the final, after being installed as the co-No. 1 seeds in the draw of 50.

But there are a number of other pros and rising young stars who could derail that potential matchup when the tournament begins Sunday at Byrd Park.

Damian Sancilio, who won the title in 2006 (as well as 1984), is the No. 3 seed, with fellow pro Cris Robinson slotted at No. 4. John Snead, runner-up three years ago, is fifth, followed by two more pros, Scott Steinour and Lynn Bybee. Kyle Parker, Mills Godwin High's top player, is eighth.

Seeded alphabetically 9-13 are Sears Driscoll, runner-up in 2004, Philip Parrish, Kevin Reichert, Eric Shulman (Deep Run High's No. 1 player) and Phil Thacker.

Others in the field who could cause some headaches for the seeds are Zach Carl, Tyler Carey, Kevin McMillen, Matt Magner, Kevin Calhoun, Tom Wallace and 12-year-old Shyam Venkatasubramanian.

On the women's side, Bridget Reichert will defend her crown as the top seed, with former champ Kirsten Elim No. 2. Another former champ, Lindsey Wyeth, is third, followed by Ginny Wortham and Katie Blow, Godwin's top girls' player.

Other strong entries in the field of 20 include Ann Garland (St. Catherine's top player), Audrey Nguyen (Collegiate's No. 1), Joy Fuhr, Mason Davis, Allison Shulman (Deep Run) and Nicole Parker.

Play is scheduled to get under way at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The family divisions are set for Saturday, when the Battle of the Pros doubles exhibition is also slated for a noon start.
