The fields for the NCAA men's and women's tennis tournaments were announced yesterday.
The 64 teams in the men's tourney include four from this state, led by the University of Virginia. Unbeaten U.Va. is seeded No. 1 overall, as expected. Also in the men's field are Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Tech and Radford.
On the women's side, the 64-team field includes VCU and William and Mary.
The tournaments begin May 9, and each has the same format. The first two rounds will be played at 16 sites. The tourneys then move to Tulsa, Okla. The NCAA men's team final will be played May 18, the women's May 20.
In the men's tournament, U.Va. is one of the firstand-second round hosts, and its guests will be Fairleigh Dickinson University, VCU and Penn State. In the first round, Virginia meets Fairleigh Dickinson, and VCU takes on Penn State. The winners will meet in the second round.
Virginia Tech's first-round opponent, at Knoxville, Tenn., is Kentucky. The winner will meet No. 8 seed Tennessee or Furman.
Radford opens against No. 4 seed Georgia, the defending NCAA champion, in Athens, Ga.
For the women, VCU is headed to Athens, Ga., and William and Mary to Durham, N.C.
The Rams will play South Carolina in the first round, with the winner likely to draw No. 2 seed Georgia in the second.
W&M's first-round foe is N.C. State. The winner of that match figures to face No. 9 seed Duke in the second round.
