MILWAUKEE -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is giving the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre at least one more day to resolve their standoff before granting the quarterback his reinstatement.
Once Favre is reinstated, the Packers will have 24 hours to decide whether to cut him or restore him to their active roster. By not acting yesterday, Goodell decreased the chances Favre would be present at Packers training camp today.
Favre also could be traded -- apparently even to an NFC North rival.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported yesterday that Packers officials have had internal discussions about trading Favre to the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears as a "last resort" to resolve the controversy.
Cowboys' Ware sits after hit to head
OXNARD, Calif. -- Two-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware sat out Dallas Cowboys practice, a day after leaving the field early following a hit to the head. Ware was on the field, but not in uniform, for the team's only practice of the day.
At the end of Wednesday morning's practice, Ware left the field early with a trainer while the rest the team gathered for its post-session stretch. Coach Wade Phillips said that Ware was feeling "dizzy a little bit" after getting "dinged in the head."
Browns' Peek to miss rest of preseason
BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns outside linebacker Antwan Peek underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday to remove a piece of cartilage and is expected to miss the preseason. Coach Romeo Crennel hopes Peek will be back for the regular-season opener Sept. 7 against Dallas.
An MRI revealed loose cartilage in the right knee. Peek tore cartilage in the same knee in the opener last season, but played 14 games before undergoing offseason surgery. He missed two games with an ankle injury.
Raiders' Russell back after injuring elbow
NAPA, Calif. -- JaMarcus Russell returned to Oakland Raiders practice after being sidelined for two sessions because of a sore elbow.
Russell took part in all team drills, but held back a bit in his throwing to make sure not to damage his elbow even more after banging it off the helmet of teammate Darren McFadden on Tuesday.
Receiver Williams released by Titans
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans released wide receiver Mike Williams. The Titans signed Williams, the 10th overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions, last Thanksgiving and told him after the season to get his weight and conditioning under control.
Williams spent two seasons with the Lions, catching 29 passes for 350 yards and a touchdown. He was traded to Oakland during the 2007 draft, but the Raiders released him in October.
Dolphins take a look at QB Carter
DAVIE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins drew another name from the past of Bill Parcells, working out former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter.
But Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said the workout is merely an evaluation of Carter, an arena league quarterback who started for the Cowboys and New York Jets before poor play and drug-related arrests ended his NFL career.
Jaguars boost line, add guard Liwienski
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jaguars signed free agent guard Chris Liwienski and waived quarterback Paul Smith.
Liwienski gives Jacksonville extra depth along the offensive line following the loss of center Brad Meester, who is out indefinitely after injuring his right biceps. Liwienski started 14 games at left guard for Miami last season.
