Guard Kendall Durant will not enroll at Virginia Tech, Hokies men's basketball coach Seth Greenberg said yesterday.
Durant, 6-3 and 185 pounds, signed a letter of intent in November and was scheduled to join a freshman class that includes Victor Davila (6-9, 240) and Gene Swindle (6-11, 260).
Durant probably will attend junior college, Greenberg said. Tech already has released Durant from his letter of intent, so NCAA rules prohibit Greenberg from saying why Durant will not enroll, the coach said.
Durant, from Capitol Heights, Md., played last season as a postgraduate at New Hampton (N.H.) Prep. New Hampton coach Peter Hutchins did not return a telephone message.
The Hokies now will have 12 scholarship players this season - one shy of the NCAA maximum - but Greenberg will not try to sign another player for the incoming class. Tech's backcourt roster will be identical to last season, with senior A.D. Vassallo and sophomores Malcolm Delaney, Hank Thorns and Dorenzo Hudson in the mix.
Greenberg does not anticipate any more roster changes before the season, making this summer less tumultuous than last offseason, when point guard Nigel Munson and center Robert Krabbendam left the team, Thorns signed late to take Munson's spot and freshman forward Augustus Gilchrist asked out of his letter of intent.
Greenberg expects Davila to contend for a significant role this season, while Swindle, more of a "project" player, might redshirt. - Darryl Slater
