DURHAM, N.C. -- William and Mary's women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament yesterday with a 4-0 victory over North Carolina State. This is the fifth time in the last six seasons the Tribe was won its opening round.
Megan Moulton-Levy dominted the No. 1 singles for William and Mary, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Daria Petrovic. Moulton-Levy and Kat Zoricic defeated Catherine Grotz and Lenka Hojckova 8-6 in the No.1 doubles.
William and Mary will face Duke today at 11:00 a.m. The Blue Devils posted a 4-0 win over Temple yesterday.
SOFTBALL
In other tournament action, fourth-seeded Liberty pounded out 14 hits to defeat No. 6 Charleston Southern 5-3. Shannon McKain drove in two runs for the Flames, and Ashley Williams and Leah Cossentino each launched a double.
No. 4 Liberty scored in six consecutive innings, including three in the fifth as the Flames downed third-seeded Coastal Carolina 8-2. Ashley Williams and J'nae Jefferson each knocked in home runs for Liberty, and Tiffany Smith earned the win.
In other tournament action, No. 4 Emory defeated second-seeded Christopher Newport 4-3 in eight innings. The Captains took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and increased the lead to two runs in the third, but the Eagles came back and scored three runs in the fourth, capitalizing on two errors by CNU, ultimately scoring one more to win. WOMEN'S GOLF
ATLANTA, GA -- Virginia's Joy Kim led the Cavaliers to ninth place in the second round of the NCAA East Regional championships yesterday. Virginia has a chance of advancing to the national tournament as the top eight teams in the field of 21 will move on.
Kim shot 5-over 77 and is in 18th place at 150. Whitney Neuhauser is one shot behind her in 25th place while Callie Nielson is 33rd at 152.
Virginia will tee off at 9 a.m. tomorrow during the final round.
