State roundup: VCU slips past Towson 9-8
Rams pound out 14 hits; Saint Louis topples Richmond

Three Rams had three hits each as Virginia Commonwealth defeated Towson 9-8 yesterday.

Richard Gonzalez, Jared Bolden and Justin Wright had three-hit performances, with Gonzalez scoring three runs and driving in two more. Eric Curtis was the only other Ram with a multi-hit game, as he went 2 for 3.

Darryl Stringfield picked up his second win of the season to improve to 2-0 as he tossed two innings of relief for VCU.

Saint Louis scored four runs in the fifth inning and was able to shut down Richmond.

Billikens' starter Dave Sever gave up two runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings of work to earn the win for Saint Louis.

Derek Boliek drove in two of the Spiders' runs, and Mike Mergenthaler knocked in his fifth home run of the season. Hank Coogan extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single.

  • Christopher Newport posted a 9-0 win over St. Joseph's on Friday but couldn't keep up yesterday as the Captains fell to Williams College 5-4 in the second round of the NCAA Division III championships.

    In other tournament action:

  • Mary Washington defeated Washington and Lee 5-4 and the Eagles improved to 21-6 on the season.
  • Washington and Lee's top-ranked women's team overcame Hunter College 9-0, increasing its record to 25-0.
