International League President Randy Mobley said he still has not zeroed in on a target date for allowing potential replacement baseball teams to formally talk to area leaders.
"I don't necessarily think it's a long time coming," he said. "But I can't say it's this week or next week."
The Triple-A International League controls the Richmond territory until the Richmond Braves relocate to Gwinnett County, Ga. A new stadium there is on track to be completed for next season's April opener, but the Braves have a contractual fallback that allows them to return to The Diamond if Gwinnett's stadium isn't ready.
Minor League Baseball has been analyzing possible replacements and will determine which league best fits Richmond. But Mobley has banned teams from talking to regional leaders until he's sure the Braves have a place to play in 2009.
Mobley indicated in May he might lift the ban by next week's Triple-A All-Star Game in Louisville, Ky. He said yesterday he wants to get an update on progress of the Gwinnett stadium when the league's general managers convene in Louisville.
Preston Williams, general manager of the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau, said yesterday that the stadium "is pretty much on schedule."
The field elevations have been graded, he said, and concrete for some portions of the foundation has been poured. Construction of the seating bowl is scheduled for September.
