Girls tennis: Godwin sweeps in Colonial tennis

Mills Godwin's No. 1 player, Katie Blow, defeated teammate Nicole Parker 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) to capture the singles title in the Colonial District girls tennis tournament yesterday at Raintree Swim and Racquet Club.

Blow and Parker then teamed to beat fellow Eagles Cathleen Crouch and Meg Kristofak 6-2, 6-3 to win the doubles crown.

All four girls advance to the Central Region individual tournament the week of May 19. The region team tournament is next week. Mills Godwin is the top seed. Douglas Freeman is the district's second representative.

  • DOMINION: No. 1 seed Sarah Stafford of James River defeated teammate Kim Morrissett 6-0, 6-4 in the singles final. In doubles, Midlothian's Elyse Anderson and Lauren Baxter beat Lacey Eramian and Michelle Lee of Clover Hill 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the finals, top-seeded Stafford and Morrissett faced No. 2 seed Anderson and Baxter and won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Stafford was named the Dominion District's player of the year
  • CENTRAL: Top-seeded Elizabeth Walsh of Prince George defeated No. 2 seed Darya Uzzell from Matoaca 9-8 (7-5) in the singles final. Walsh was down 7-3 before coming back to force a tiebreaker. After trailing 3-0 in the tiebreaker, she won the tiebreaker and the match 7-5. In doubles, No. 1 seed Walsh and Stephanie Edlin beat second-seeded Kayla Diaz and Leanne Tucker of Dinwiddie 8-5.
  • CAPITAL: No. 1 seed Shao-Ching Tu of Atlee defeated teammate Rebekah Ferguson 6-3, 6-1 in the singles final. In doubles, Tu and Ferguson defeated second-seeded Nicole Holler and Kaitlyn Whitaker from Hanover 7-5, 6-0.
