NINTH SOUTHERN TRACK CLASSIC

at Sports Backers Stadium

Richmond vs. World; that's one way of billing tonight's Ninth Southern Track Classic at Sports Backers Stadium.

Elite local high school athletes will be challenged by a Who's Who contingent of out-of-towners, featuring four national champions.

Field events commence at 5, with running at 6:40.

National champs scheduled to compete are:

  • Bethel's Javell Bullard in the 400;
  • Tynita Butts of T.C. Williams in the girls' high jump;
  • Lakeland's Chris Copeland, boys' high jump; and
  • George Washington-Danville's David Wilson in the triple jump.

    Bullard has run 47.14 this season. The top area competition may come from Douglas Freeman's Ulrick Smith (48.71).

    Butts (with a best of 5-8½ this spring) will be pushed by Deep Run's Briana Hudson (with a personal record of 5-9).

    Copeland has cleared 6-10 this spring. The best among the local entries is Deep Run's Kirk Fischer (6-6).

    David Wilson has flown 47-5¾ this spring; Chris Kourlesis of J.R. Tucker leads the local contingent with a 46-2½.

    This meet is by invitation-only. There are about 10 athletes in each field event. There will be finals only in the individual races.

    Three returning champions from'07 are Midlothian's Paige Johnston in the 800, E.C. Glass's Daniel Inge in the pole vault and Copeland in the high jump.

    Sprint and long-distance fans, alike, will be treated.

    In the boys' 100, Cosby sophomore whiz Mitchell Shifflett (10.79) will take on a field led by Green Run's Dejor Simmons (10.67).

    The girls' 100, Desiree Russell of Manchester (12.61) is entered against Heritage's Rachel Hunt (11.9).

    In the boys' mile, Blacksburg's Pete Dorrell (4:14.29) will be challenged by Atlee's Ben DeJarnette (4:15.02).

    The girls' two-mile could be a chase between Chantilly's Lia DiValentin (10:39.9) and Midlothian's Kathleen Lautzenheiser (10:48.8).

    The boys' two-mile sends Midlothian's Jason Witt (9:16.6) against Brad Kenimar of T.C. Williams (9:12.2).

    The State Group AAA track meet will be May 30-31 in Newport News. Tonight's action under the lights could be a precursor of what is to come.
