If in need of power for your hedge trimmer, toaster or vacuum cleaner, locate an electrical socket.

If looking for softball power, plug in to Jana Martin.

Wonders never cease -- small wonders, that is.

Defying stereotypes, pocket-sized Martin (5-2, 120 pounds) bats cleanup for surging Lee-Davis High -- ranked No. 2 in the T-D Top 10.

"It's funny; the outfielders always move in when I come up," the senior third baseman said. "I guess it's because I'm so short and small."

Cheating in isn't advised unless outfielders have a high threshold for embarrassment.

"I don't like bragging or anything; but, yes, I do consider myself a power hitter,'" she said.

Martin's .370 average includes two home runs, three triples and four doubles among her 19 hits.

"Jana's got a lot of bat speed," L-D coach Jackie Davis said. "She's had some of our biggest hits -- long ones -- this season."

Triple trouble: Martin launched chain-link rattling triples against arguably the two toughest foes, Deep Run and Hanover.

Home-run trots are rare in Mechanicsville. L-D may have the area's largest park, outside of Maymont. The fences are 220 feet at the poles and 260 straight-away. Most girls fields are about 200 to 210.

Martin's homer against Henrico was an inside-the-park shot. She added an over-the-fence blast at Patrick Henry on Monday.

Familiarity: Referring to L-D as "more like a family," Martin has been teammates with many of the girls since T-Ball in the Mechanicsville Little League.

"I've been playing with Chelsea Mallory and Heather Hannon since I was 4 or 5," Martin said. "It's been nearly as long with some of the others."

Martin played two JV seasons before sliding into Davis' lineup as a junior.

"Jana's got a great back hand and a real strong arm," Davis said.

Rotation: Unlike many teams that lean almost entirely on one pitcher, the Confederates feature a snazzy 1-2 punch in juniors Kelsie Hudson and Melanie Hazelwood.

"It doesn't matter who's pitching," Martin said. "We've got a lot of confidence in both of them."

Until hitting a speed bump at Hermitage (7-2 loss May 1), Hudson was 8-1 with a 1.08 ERA and Hazelwood 4-0, 0.00.

Contenders: L-D (14-2 this season) was 15-7 in 2007, runner-up to Hanover in the Capital District and a first-round Central Region loser.

The current edition has overcome injuries to standouts Casey Clarke and Mallory. Shortstop Clarke suffered a torn thumb ligament and has been reduced to pinch running. Mallory (normally the catcher) has been used at DH.

Martin, a National Honor Society member, plans to attend James Madison University with no intentions of playing softball.

"I'm going to miss it -- miss it so much," she said. "That's why I'm playing every game now like it's the last game I'll ever play."
