Ellis suspended 30 games

The Golden State Warriors suspended injured guard Monta Ellis for 30 games without pay yesterday for violating his lucrative new contract by getting into a moped accident in the offseason.

Ellis, who agreed to a six-year deal worth $66 million during the summer, severely sprained his ankle in the accident in August. He recently underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament, sidelining him for at least the first several weeks of the regular season.

The Warriors counted their four preseason games in the suspension's length, which means Ellis won't return to the club until after Golden State's 26th regular-season game, against Indiana on Dec. 17.

Magliore out six to eight weeks

MIAMI -- Miami Heat center Jamaal Magliore will miss at least six weeks with a broken left hand, and could be sidelined even longer if surgery is required to repair the fracture.

Magliore was injured in Miami's preseason overtime loss against New Jersey in Paris on Thursday. He returned to South Florida after the game, while the Heat remained behind for a rematch with the Nets on Sunday in London.

With Magliore out indefinitely, the Heat will see more of Joel Anthony and David Padgett at center.

GOLF

Price seizes one-shot lead

TIMONIUM, Md. -- Nick Price moved into position for his first win on the Champions Tour, shooting a bogey-free 66 to take a one-shot lead over D.A. Weibring after three rounds of the Senior Players Championship.

Starting the day in a fifth-place tie, Price moved up the leader board with birdies on three of the first five holes. He then peeled off 11 straight pars before sinking a 13-foot birdie putt on 17.

Price, 51, barely missed a 23-foot birdie putt on 18, then tapped in to close at 8-under 202.

Price earned more than $20 million on the PGA Tour and won two player-of-the-year awards, but he has yet to cash a winner's check in 30 tournaments on the 50-and-over circuit.

Weibring made five birdies in shooting a 66. Jeff Sluman (64) and Gene Jones (69) were at 6 under.

Sabbatini up by one after 63

SAN ANTONIO -- South Africa's Rory Sabbatini birdied the final hole for a 7-under 63 and a one-stroke lead over Zach Johnson in the Texas Open.

Sabbatini, a four-time tour winner who lives in Southlake outside Dallas, had an eagle and four birdies for a back-nine 29. Winless since the 2007 Colonial in Fort Worth, he had a 14-under 196 total.

Johnson, the 2007 Masters champion, shot a bogey-free 62.

Kim leads Stanford by one

DANVILLE, Calif. -- South Korea's In-Kyung Kim remained in position for her first LPGA Tour victory, shooting a 3-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead over Angela Stanford in the Longs Drugs Challenge.

The 20-year-old Kim, in her second season on the tour, had an 11-under 205 total on the Blackhawk Country Club course. She won the 2005 U.S. Girls' Junior.

Stanford shot a 67, the best round of the day.

TENNIS

Jankovic gains Kremlin Cup final

MOSCOW -- Top-ranked Jelena Jankovic rallied from a set down to cruise into the final of the Kremlin Cup with a 0-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over defending champion Elena Dementieva.

In her third straight final, the 23-year-old Serb will face Vera Zvonareva. The seventh-seeded Zvonareva ousted Dinara Safina 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Marat Safin, the brother of Dinara, advanced to his second final at his hometown event when Misha Zverev withdrew from his first career ATP Tour semifinal because of illness.

Safin, who lost to Nikolay Davydenko in the 2006 final, will face Igor Kunitsyn. Unseeded Kunitsyn defeated Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 6-3 to reach his first ATP Tour final.

In other tennis news:

  • Top-seeded David Nalbandian and Robin Soderling routed opponents to reach the Stockholm Open final. Nalbandian cruised past Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 6-1, and Soderling outplayed teenager Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-0.
  • In Vienna, Austria, Gael Monfils and Philipp Petzschner reached the final of the BA Tennis Trophy. Eighth-seeded Monfils defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) and qualifier Petzschner rallied to stop 2004 champion Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

    Newman to miss another month

IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman will be out at least another month after surgery for a sports hernia. That means Adam "Pacman" Jones will remain in the starting lineup -- at least for today's game against Arizona.

Newman missed the preseason and the season opener because of a groin injury. He then played in three games before getting hurt again in practice last week. He had surgery Friday in North Carolina, and the earliest he is likely to return is mid-November.

    In other NFL news:

  • The Cincinnati Bengals signed Dave Rayner, giving them another kicker with Shayne Graham (Virginia Tech) hampered by a sore groin. Graham didn't practice on Thursday or Friday and is listed as questionable for today's game at the New York Jets. The Bengals already are missing quarterback Carson Palmer, who will be no better than the backup behind Ryan Fitzpatrick because of a sore passing elbow.

    AUTO RACING

    Hamilton takes pole

OMAYA, Japan -- McLaren's Lewis Hamilton tightened his grip on the Formula One title, claiming the pole position for the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix.

The championship leader and winner here last year took his sixth pole of the season with a time of 1 minute, 18.404 seconds, and will start four grid positions ahead of his title rival, Felipe Massa of Ferrari.

Kimi Raikkonen was second quickest, putting him on the front row for the first time since the French Grand Prix with a time 0.24 seconds slower than Hamilton.

    ELSEWHERE

  • Anze Kopitar has signed a seven-year extension with the Los Angeles Kings, putting the 21-year-old center under contract through the 2015-16 season. The seven-year deal is the second-longest in club history. Wayne Gretzky, the NHL's career leader in several categories, signed an eight-year deal in 1988. The contract was extended from seven to nine years after the first year.
  • Florida Panthers defenseman Bryan McCabe is expected to miss two weeks because of a back injury suffered in Friday night's season opener at Carolina.
  • In Berlin, Vitali Klitschko reclaimed the WBC heavyweight title, stopping Samuel Peter with a technical knockout. Peter chose not to come back out after eight rounds.

    AROUND THE STATE

  • Staunton's Nick Biesecker shot a second-round 71 to take a four-shot lead entering today's final round of the Virginia State Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Wintergreen's Stoney Creek course in Nellysford. Biesecker is at 3-under 141. Wytheville's David Schmidt and Virginia golf coach Bowen Sarget are four off the pace. -- From Staff and Wire Reports
