University of Richmond quarterback Eric Ward was named national offensive player of the week in the Football Championship Subdivision by The Sports Network.
The junior from Atlanta passed for a career-high 236 yards and two touchdowns in the Spiders' 28-10 win at Elon on Saturday night. Ward, 6-3 and 209 pounds, also ran 14 times for 59 yards.
"With Eric, it's another added dimension," UR coach Mike London said of Ward's running. "It's not that we're trying to turn him into a running quarterback, but I think teams will have to prepare for him in terms of not just passing, but also having to account for him because he can run the ball."
Ward, a three-year starter, was also named the Colonial Athletic Association offensive player of the week. UR, now No. 3 in the FCS poll, visits Virginia Saturday.
