Tracks may swap race dates
ATLANTA - NASCAR will run under the lights at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2009, The Associated Press has learned.
Atlanta Motor Speedway and NASCAR officials are planning to announce the schedule change today.
Atlanta's place on the racing calendar also could move. Atlanta would receive the 2009 Labor Day weekend race that's happening this season in California. Fontana would receive Talladega's fall race, while Talladega would receive Atlanta's fall race, set for late October this year.

Wash. team stays alive in series
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Faced with elimination, the Little Leaguers from Mill Creek, Wash., turned to the home run to stay alive in the Little League World Series.
Four players hit homers - including two from left-handed slugger Alec Kisena - in a 16-hit attack and Washington beat Hagerstown, Md., 15-5 for its first win of the tournament.
Washington has a chance to advance, as long as itwins its last pool-play game today.
Mexico clinched a berth in the international semis.

Bermudan dies in Va. motorcycle event
ALTON - A 14-year-old from Bermuda is dead and another teen is recovering after a motorcycle crash during a race at Virginia International Raceway in Alton.
Race organizer Red Bull said Toriano Wilson died yesterday at University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill.
Wilson fell on the track Sunday during the first lap of the Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup race and was struck by another rider while attempting to get out of the way.
Track officials say 14-year-old Luciano Ribodino of Argentina was transported to Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Former Iowa State coach dies at 79
AMES, Iowa - Former Iowa State basketball coach Glen Anderson, the third-winningest coach in school history, has died. He was 79. Iowa State officials said Mr. Anderson died Friday at his home in Hot Springs, Ark.
Mr.Anderson coached the Cyclones from 1959 to 1971, finishing 142-161 in those 12 seasons. He led the Cyclones to six upper-division finishes in the Big 8.

Maryland picks Steffy to start at QB
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jordan Steffy was picked to start at quarterback for Maryland in the season opener against Delaware by coach Ralph Friedgen.
Steffy lost his starting job last season when he left the fifth game of the season, against Rutgers, with a concussion. Chris Turner took over, guided the Terrapins into the Emerald Bowl and entered summer practice as the favorite to beat out Steffy and Josh Portis.
Turner will serve as the No. 2 quarterback, and Portis also will have a role with the offense.

Del Potro resting for U.S. Open
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Juan Martin del Potro withdrew from the Pilot Pen tournament, citing exhaustion. The third seed in the tournament said he wants to recover for the U.S. Open, which begins next week.
On the court yesterday, American player John Isner defeated Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round. Fellow American Robby Ginepri also advanced to the second round after defeating Luis Horna 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Arena hired as Galaxy's new coach, GM
CARSON, Calif. - Former U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena was hired as coach and general manager of David Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy, which hasn't won a game in more than two months.
Arena, a former coach at the University of Virginia, takes over for Ruud Gullit, who resigned as coach last week for personal reasons, and president and General Manager Alexi Lalas, who was fired the same day.
Arena has a 77-51-10 regular-season record and a 14-5-2 postseason mark in MLS, leading D.C. United to two titles. He was the most successful head coach in national team history with a 71-30-29 record that included a quarterfinal finish at the 2002 World Cup.
