Perhaps a team of Disney characters -- Minnie Mouse pitching, Daisy Duck behind the plate, Snow White on first, etc. -- might have stood a better chance.
As it was, the Richmond Storm U-18 team struck Orlando, Fla., like a hurricane blowing through a city made of straw.
Manager Bob Hansen's collection of college and high school girls posted an 11-0 record, outscoring its foes 78-3, en route to the Fast Nationals title at the Disney World Complex.
"We generally have good seasons; this one was exceptional," Hansen said. "Oh, man, these girls did a great job."
Meghan Cobb issued the coup de grace, hurling a five-inning, perfect game in the 8-0 final against the Lady Hawks of nearby Ocoee, Fla.
Cobb, a former L.C. Bird standout who will be a sophomore at Catawba (N.C.) this fall, shared mound duties with Lee-Davis senior Kelsie Hudson and Powhatan graduate Rebecca Mills, who is headed to Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College.
Hudson had a three-hitter in an 8-0 win over Orion Hunter in the winners' bracket final.
Powhatan graduate Emily Morris socked a grand slam for all the support Hudson needed.
The Orlando domination was part of a snowballing, two-week run by the Storm. The previous week, they took third in the Pony League nationals in Ohio, going 8-1.
"It's a talented group that came together," Hansen said of a squad that went 52-8 overall. "A few of the girls, like Meghan, are aging out. I think in their cases, they wanted to go out strong."
