Virtually every baseball all-star team in the nation, no matter how gifted, ends its season with a loss.

The Glen Allen U-11's are that rare exception.

Defeat is a flavor manager Virt Frick's squad never tasted en route to winning Babe Ruth League District 3, Virginia and Southeast Region titles.

Opponents lined up like 10 pins, and Glen Allen bowled them over - all 10 of them - while posting a 10-0 postseason record.

The season ended with a 4-2 win over Coosa, Ala., in the Southeast Regional final in Charleston, S.C.

The shiniest of Glen Allen's stars was shortstop/closer Reid Leonard, a 5-4, 125-pound Short Pump Middle sixth-grader.

"He's probably the best all-round 11 I've ever seen," Frick said. "He's better than anyone I've ever seen his age."

Leonard launched eight homers in all-star play, including four at regionals.

As a pitcher in the title game, he came on in relief in the fifth and sixth and fanned six.

"Reed throws 68-70 miles an hour," Frick said. "He's got an exceptionally strong arm and is very fluid."

Leonard was part of a rotation that included Austin Slough, Chesdin Harrington and Patrick Hall.

Michael Sweeney added three homers, Kaleb Butler two and Winston Frick one.

Leonard, who also plays for an older age group with the AAU Mustangs, hails from good baseball stock. His father, Jack, was a cog in J.R. Tucker's 1978 Group AAA state title.

Jack was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles out of high school and by Los Angeles while at Louisburg Junior College.

"Reid is way ahead of where I was at that age," said the elder Leonard.
