Seven seniors receive JRAC scholarships
The James River Aquatic Club will award seven Michael Jameson Stott scholarships to area seniors who are headed to college next month.
The scholarships total $7,000. The scholarships are in honor of past JRAC president and 30-year volunteer Mike Stott. The program began in 1996 and has awarded $75,000 to 71 recipients.
The winners this year are Emily Anthony of Kanawha (Douglas Freeman, Williams and Mary); Sydney Kastner of Lakeside (J.R. Tucker, Virginia); Malcolm McConnell of Three Chopt (Maggie Walker Governor's School, Virginia); Kerri Moriarty of Three Chopt (Hermitage, Virginia Tech); Paul Ream of Southampton (Maggie Walker Governor's School, Davidson); Mimi Richardson of Kanawha (Douglas Freeman, Virginia Tech); and Drake Watson of Westwood (Collegiate, Virginia).
The scholarships will be presented at 47th renewal of the JRAC championship meet, which begins today and concludes tomorrow. The meet venue is the NOVA Aquatic Center, 12207 Gayton Road in western Henrico County.
Competition begins each day at 9 a.m. Swimming concludes at approximately 4 p.m. today and 3:30 tomorrow.
More than 1,200 swimmers from 19 clubs are expected to participate. Southampton, which has won 13 of the past 14 championships, is the favorite again.
Springers commit
Two members of last season's Highland Springs basketball team have made college choices.
Starting post player Dazmond Starke will attend Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher. Key reserve Ryan Henderson is headed to Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg.
Starke, 6-6, transferred to Highland Springs from Louisa for his final season. He scored more than 1,000 points in his high school career. He was the Springers' leading rebounder and was named first-team all-Capital District and second-team All-Metro.
The 6-7 Henderson transferred to Highland Springs from George Wythe for his senior season as well. The Springers were 25-2 last season.
The two join teammates Harvey Mills (Virginia State basketball) and Harry Lee Daniel (University of Richmond football) on the college level.
Short takes
This is a computerized meet system in which coaches from around the country submit best times and scores (divers) in a dual meet format. In the independent schools category, the Cougars' boys were third, up from 16th. The girls were 16th, up from 19th.
