SAN DIEGO -- Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo came up with a huge sack yesterday -- a huge sack of money, that is.

Castillo, 24, agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2014 valued at about $43 million. The deal will pay Castillo a guaranteed $17.5 million in signing and roster bonuses. Castillo's rookie contract was due to expire after next season.

Castillo, a three-year veteran regarded as one of the league's best young defensive linemen, has 13 sacks in 36 career games. He had only 2½ sacks last year when he missed six games because of ankle surgery. He missed four games in 2006 because of another ankle injury.

Patriots sign Wheatley; Virginian Mayo remains unsigned

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England signed second-round pick Terrence Wheatley, leaving only top pick Jerod Mayo unsigned two days before the start of training camp.

Mayo, a linebacker who played at Kecoughtan High School in Hampton before starring at Tennessee, was the 10th overall selection in April's draft.

Wheatley, a cornerback, is expected to challenge for the starting cornerback slot vacated by Asante Samuel, who left for Philadelphia as a free agent. In other Patriots news:

  • Offensive lineman Nick Kaczur pleaded guilty to speeding in a deal that will put a misdemeanor drug possession charge on hold.

Kaczur, 28, possessed 202 OxyContin pills when pulled over April 27 near Utica, N.Y., according to police reports. Kaczur reportedly since has helped federal authorities arrest the man accused of supplying him with the pills. The drug possession charge will be dismissed if he stays out of trouble for the next six months.

Colts' Harrison expected to be ready for camp

INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts receiver Marvin Harrison, who missed most of last season with a left knee injury, is expected to be ready to practice when the team reports to training camp tomorrow, according to coach Tony Dungy.

Harrison, an eight-time Pro Bowl pick, was expected to open training camp on the phyisically unable to perform list.

Dungy also said sixth-round pick Tom Santi (Virginia) is expected to open camp on the PUP list because of an infected bursa sac, the same condition that led to knee surgery for quarterback Peyton Manning.

"Santi has a bursa sac infection too, although his didn't get quite the national attention Peyton's did," Dungy joked.

Bears add a year to Urlacher's contract

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago linebacker Brian Urlacher, a six-time Pro Bowler, signed a contract extension through the 2012 season worth $18 million.
