CLEVELAND -Jhonny Peralta drove in three runs, and the Cleveland Indians beat Scott Kazmir and Tampa Bay 5-2 to complete a four-game sweep and send the Rays to their seventh straight loss.

Peralta's two-run homer in the fifth inning off Kazmir (7-5) gave Cleveland a 4-2 lead. The Indians entered the series having lost 10 straight, their worst streak since 1979, but outscored the Rays 31-8 to extend their home winning streak over Tampa Bay to 13. The Rays have not won in Cleveland since Sept. 29, 2005, and dropped 18 of the last 20 meetings overall.

Tom Mastny (1-2) pitched two perfect innings to earn the win and Masa Kobayashi, the Indians' fifth pitcher, worked the ninth for his fifth save.

All-star Grady Sizemore opened the Indians' fifth with a walk and scored on Peralta's two-out homer, the shortstop's 16th of the season and fourth in his past seven games. Andy Marte made it 5-2 with a leadoff homer in the sixth.

Kazmir, one of Tampa Bay's three all-stars, gave up five runs and eight hits over six innings, dropping to 1-4 in his last seven starts since June 11 following a six-game winning streak.

Red Sox move into first in AL East

BOSTON - Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched six scoreless innings, and the Boston Red Sox edged the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 to reclaim the AL East lead going into the all-star break. The Red Sox moved a half-game ahead of Tampa Bay and took the division lead for the first time since June 28.

J.D. Drew gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead when he doubled home Dustin Pedroia in the first inning. Pedroia hit .440 over the last 20 games and finished with 124 at the break, one shy of the franchise record shared by Wade Boggs and Nomar Garciaparra. Pedroia drove in a run in the fourth with a groundout.

Matsuzaka (10-1) struggled with his control but worked around four hits and five walks. Jonathan Papelbon escaped in the ninth for his 28th save and 100th of his career. Daniel Cabrera (6-5) fell to 2-10 lifetime against Boston.

Rangers outslug White Sox 12-11

ARLINGTON, Texas -Second baseman Ian Kinsler extended his majors-best hitting streak to 25 games with three hits and drove in three runs for the Texas Rangers, who held on for a wild 12-11 victory over the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox.

Marlon Byrd hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh that finally put Texas ahead to stay, and Michael Young added a two-run single to push his hitting streak to 15 games. The Rangers (50-46) won for the ninth time in 13 games.

Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye (4 for 5) homered for Chicago (54-40), which had a season-high 22 hits. The White Sox maintained a 1½-game division lead over Minnesota despite their third loss in four games. The 22 hits were the most allowed by Texas in a victory.

Burrell, Phils top D'backs 6-3

PHILADELPHIA - Pat Burrell hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3. After starters Brandon Webb and Cole Hamels left after the seventh with the score tied at 2, the Phillies broke away. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard singled and Burrell followed with his 23rd home run, connecting against Chad Qualls (2-7). Pedro Feliz hit a solo homer one out later. Ryan Madson (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the win. Chad Tracy homered and Chris Burke had three hits for the Diamondbacks.

McCann, Braves whip Padres 12-3

SAN DIEGO - All-Star catcher Brian McCann homered and drove in three runs to help the Atlanta Braves rout the San Diego Padres 12-3. McCann extended his on-base streak to eight straight. That includes three walks Saturday night and a walk and hit by pitch along with his 3 for 3 yesterday. Rookie Jorge Campillo (4-4) tossed six strong innings. He left the game in the top of the seventh when he fouled a pitch off his left foot. Mark Teixeira had two doubles and two RBI, and Brent Lillibridge went 3 for 5 with two RBI. Lillibridge hit his first major-league homer Saturday night.

Billingsley brilliant in Dodgers' win

LOS ANGELES - Chad Billingsley struck out a career-high 13 without a walk, and the Los Angeles Dodgers used a six-run first inning to beat the Florida Marlins 9-1.Billingsley (9-8) allowed a run and five hits over seven innings. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.25 and is 5-1 in his past six starts. Billingsley gave up his only run on a first-inning RBI double by former Dodger Luis Gonzalez, then retired 15 of his next 16 batters - 10 of them on strikeouts. During one stretch, he fanned six in a row. Matt Kemp went 3 for 4, scoring twice and driving in two runs in his return to the leadoff spot.

Backe, Astros silence Nats

WASHINGTON - Brandon Backe pitched seven-plus innings and helped himself with a pair of hits, leading the Houston Astros to a 5-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. Backe raised his batting average to .345 while lowering his ERA to 4.76. He scored after leading off the third inning with a double, then singled and scored in the seventh. Backe (6-9) supplemented his first multihit game of the year with his best game to date on the mound. He allowed only five hits, walked four and struck out five.

  • GIANTS 4, CUBS 1: Tim Lincecum tossed eight strong innings to hand fellow all-star Ryan Dempster his first loss at Wrigley Field, leading San Francisco over the Chicago. Lincecum (11-2) struck out nine and allowed one runs and six hits. He also hit his first career triple.
  • BREWERS 3, REDS 2: CC Sabathia pitched his first National League complete game, and pinch-hitter Craig Counsell hit a game-winning sacrifice fly to help host Milwaukee avoid being swept by Cincinnati. Sabathia (2-0) sruck out nine, including the side in the top of the ninth, and walked one.
  • CARDINALS 11, PIRATES 6: Aaron Miles drove in five runs with a home run and a triple, and St. Louis overcame host Pittsburgh. Ryan Ludwick added his 21st homer, a solo shot in the eighth that was his third in as many games. Troy Glaus completed a 10-for-13 series with a home run, his second in as many days.
  • BLUE JAYS 4, YANKEES 1: A.J. Burnett came within two outs of a shutout, and Marco Scutaro hit a three-run home run to help Toronto defeat visiting New York. Burnett (10-8) allowed one run and six hits, walked one and struck out eight. Jason Giambi spoiled Burnett's shutout bid with a home run in the ninth, his 19th. B.J. Ryan notched his 18th save.
  • ANGELS 4, ATHLETICS 3: Erick Aybar's infield single drove in the winning run with two outs in the ninth, and Los Angeles to win at Oakland. Casey Kotchman hit a home run, and Howie Kendrick drove in two runs to help the AFrancisco Rodriguez got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his major-league leading 38th save in 41 chances.
  • MARINERS 4, ROYALS 3: Adrian Beltre blooped a double and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by catcher John Buck during a ninth-inning rundown, enabling Seattle Mariners to escape with a win at Kansas City. The unearned run made a loser of Joakim Soria (1-2), the Royals' lone all-star. Sean Green (2-2) picked up the win.

    SHORT HOPS

  • Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead in the second inning despite not putting a ball in play. The Rays drew four walks off LH Jeremy Sowers, who also committed a balk and struck out the side during a 41-pitch inning.
  • Baltimore dropped its 14th straight Sunday game. The major-league record for consecutive losses on a specific day is 21 - the 1939 St. Louis Browns and 1890 Pittsburgh Innocents both did it on Tuesdays.
  • The Los Angeles Angels are a major-league best 36-19 in games decided by two runs or less.

    Greg Maddux became the oldest pitcher in big-league history to steal a base at 42 years and 89 days when he stole a base in San Diego's loss to Atlanta on Saturday night. Jim Kaat had the previous mark. It was Maddux's 11th stolen base of his career.
