China says it won't delay broadcasts

China will allow broadcasters to beam live pictures from Tiananmen Square and the capital's streets during the Beijing Olympics, reversing a decision to delay broadcasts.

U.S. and European rights-holders had voiced concern that delays would give Chinese authorities the ability to censor them. The delay was announced in March after riots broke out in Tibet protesting Chinese rule.

China pledged to allow 22,000 accredited Olympic journalists to report freely at the Games as part of its bid to host the event. Human rights groups have questioned the fulfillment of that promise.

China's state broadcaster also will show live pictures instead of delaying them by 30 seconds, its usual practice.

Ronaldinho to lead Brazil's soccer team

Former world player of the year Ronaldinho and Real Madrid's Robinho were selected by Brazil for the record five-time world champion's bid for a first Olympics soccer gold medal.

Manchester United midfielder Anderson and AC Milan teenager Alexandre Pato were also named to the 18-man roster, along with striker Jo, signed last week by Manchester City for an undisclosed club record fee.

The Brazilians are seeking the only major title they have yet to win and are trying to improve on silver medals in 1984 and 1988.

Under Olympic rules, the 16 teams in the event can pick three players over the age of 23.

  • Juliana, one-half of the top women's beach volleyball team from powerhouse Brazil and the third-ranked team in the world, injured her right knee and will not play again before the Olympics, her press agent said. Although surgery on her cruciate ligament was recommended, she will continue with more conservative treatment instead in the hopes of being able to play in Beijing.
  • Dutch showjumper Albert Zoer, considered one of the favorites to win an Olympic gold medal, broke his leg in two places during training yesterday and could miss the Beijing Games. Zoer, 32, was training a young horse when he fell. It did not say which leg he broke.
  • Jevon Tarantino, a 24-year-old from Boca Raton, Fla., earned a spot on the Olympic team after his performance at the five-day, 36-diver selection camp, which ended Sunday. Tarantino will have one shot at Olympic gold in China. He and partner Chris Colwill, a Brandon, Fla., native, are competing in the 3-meter synchro event. At the selection camp, they swept the four days of competition, but are expected to go to the Olympics as underdogs to the Chinese. - From Wire Reports
