At least four women with state connections will participate in the Olympic women's basketball tournament, but not all will represent the United States.
Former Virginia Tech standouts Ieva Kublina of Latvia and Nare Diawara of Mali will play for their home countries. Kublina, a 6-4 post player, played as a high school senior at Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond before enrolling at Tech.
Former Old Dominion basketball All-American Anne Donovan will coach the U.S. women in Beijing. Former University of Virginia All-American Dawn Staley, now the head coach at South Carolina, will serve as one of Donovan's assistants.
Staley carried the American flag during the Opening Ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Games. Those Olympics, held in Athens, Greece, were Staley's last as a player.
