For all those diehard hoopsters who are convinced they still have game, it's time to prove it. One of the Richmond area's biggest 3 on 3 basketball tournaments is scheduled for later this month.

The U.S. Army will sponsor an event on July 26-27 at the Dominion Power campus in the Innsbrook office park in Glen Allen. The event's organizers are expecting between 150 to 200 teams -- or 450-600 individuals -- to participate.

The U.S. Army 3 on 3 Summer Hoops tournament, which begins each day at 8 a.m. and will be played on 15 to 20 courts, features elite and standard divisions. The standard division consists of youth (grades 3 to 8), high school (grades 9 to 12) and adult teams (age 18 and over).

The standard division is intended for recreational players, who will make up most tournament participants. It includes players of all abilities, from those playing basketball regularly to those who play only occasionally.

The elite division targets the most talented adult teams from the Mid-Atlantic area. At least two members of each team must have college basketball experience.

The tournament is open to male, female, and co-ed teams. There are no co-ed teams in the elite division.

In addition, CarMax will sponsor a slam-dunk contest on July 26 on the Arena Court. A separate slam-dunk contest for women is also on the agenda.

Registration is available both by phone at 804-285-9495 and at www.SportsBackers.org. The registration fee is $85 (high school and youth) and $120 (adult and elite). The deadline for registration is July 18.

Admission is free for all tournament games. -- Ralph N. Paulk
