Georgia Tech CB charged with rape

ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech cornerback Jerrard Tarrant has been charged with rape and has been suspended from the football team.

The alleged victim said she was raped at an on-campus dormitory April 25 and reported the incident to police that morning, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported yesterday.

Charles Lea, an attorney representing Tarrant, said his client is innocent of the charges.

Tarrant, 19, was released Saturday on $40,000 bail, the newspaper reported. The 6-2, 185-pound redshirt freshman from Carrollton, Ga., was considered a potential starter at cornerback.

Tarrant has been suspended indefinitely from the Tech football team pending the outcome of the case, Yellow Jackets coach Paul Johnson said.

Lea said Tarrant's side of the case will be presented at the proper time. "We maintain that any sexual activity that took place was entirely consensual," he said. In other college football news:

A spokesman for the Bristol County district attorney said Andrews was arrested after the alleged incident, which occurred when Andrews returned home at about 1 a.m. and an argument began between him and his girlfriend.

Gregg Miliote said Andrews, a backup since being drafted by the Patriots in 2006, was charged with illegal possession of a large capacity firearm and assault with a dangerous weapon. In other NFL news:

Rolston's rights traded to Tampa Bay

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild traded the rights to star forward Brian Rolston to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a conditional draft pick.

The Wild will get a selection in either the 2009 or 2010 draft, with Wild spokesman Aaron Sickman saying it will depend on whether Tampa Bay re-signs Rolston.

On Saturday, the Lightning acquired the rights to Pittsburgh forwards Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts for a conditional draft pick. Canadian sports channel TSN reported Sunday night that Tampa Bay had signed Malone to a seven-year, $35.1 million deal.

The Lightning yesterday signed Roberts to a one-year contract and forward Vinny Prospal to a multiyear deal.

    Sabres re-sign Gaustad

LEWISTON, N.Y -- The Buffalo Sabres rewarded Paul Gaustad for his hard-hitting style, re-signing the blue-collar center to a four-year, $9.2 million contract.

Gaustad, a restricted free agent, had his rights retained by the Sabres last week when they made him a minimum-salary qualifying offer.

The Sabres, though, had targeted Gaustad as a core player last spring and had expressed their intention to lock him up to a long-term deal. In other NHL news:

    Landis loses appeal

Floyd Landis lost his final chance to retain his 2006 Tour de France title the last step of a long, multimillion-dollar process that poked holes in the anti-doping establishment but ultimately left the cyclist as just another convicted cheater.

A three-person panel at the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a previous panel's decision, ruling his positive doping test during the Tour two years ago was, indeed, valid. Landis also must pay $100,000 toward the legal fees of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

"I am saddened by today's decision," Landis said. "I am looking into my legal options and deciding on the best way to proceed." He has 30 days to appeal to the Swiss Federal Court. AROUND THE STATE
