Thursday night's NBA draft came and went, and Reggie Williams' name wasn't called. Given that many mock drafts had projected him as a second-round pick, it wasn't the best of nights for the high-scoring guard from Virginia Military Institute.
"It was a little disappointing," Williams, a Prince George High graduate, said yesterday. "I saw some of the kids that went in the draft, and I was kind of stunned. But I guess everything happens for a reason. I'm all right."
Williams' dream of an NBA career hasn't been dashed. His agent, Jerry Dianis, said yesterday that he's heard from more than a half-dozen NBA organizations that want the 6-5 Williams to play on the summer-league teams. Those interested include Orlando, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Golden State, New Jersey and Sacramento.
"We're still researching some of the teams, to see roster availability and how many people they have at the 2-guard spot," said Williams, who led Division I in scoring in 2006-07 (28.1 ppg) and again in 2007-08 (27.8).
Dianis said: "Technically, he's a free agent, and in a lot of instances, it's better to be able to pick and choose where you're going. . . . The good news is most teams had Reggie on their board from 40 to 60."
NBA summer leagues will be held in Orlando, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
Williams, who finished his college career with a state-record 2,556 points, hoped to become the first VMI player selected in an NBA draft since Gay Elmore in 1987. The Bucks took Elmore in the sixth round that year. The Lakers chose VMI legend Ron Carter in the second round of the 1978 draft. - Jeff White
