Beard, Nunn set to swim in Omaha
Scott Beard and Emma Nunn are hoping some fast times in Omaha, Neb., will earn them a berth on the U.S. Olympic swim team.
At this week's Olympic Trials at Omaha's Quest Center, Beard will swim the 100 backstroke and Nunn the 200 fly. Beard, 21, is a rising senior at Virginia Tech who strokes for SwimQuest. Nunn, 14, competes for NOVA Aquatics.
Youth hoops league returns to Pine Camp
The CarMax Summer Basketball League tipped off last night at Pine Camp, and the ball will continue bouncing the next two months.
Leagues games, for youngsters 10-17, will be Monday through Thursday from 5:45-10 p.m.
Led by CEO Tom Folliard, CarMax donated $100,000 for upgrades last year. It has added an additional $60,000 this year for more bleachers and other improvements.
The Pine Camp courts (4901 Old Brook Road) are open to the public except during league action.
Midlothian Middle's Willard is running wild
Sean Willard, a rising Midlothian Middle School eighth-grader, has placed state track titles on his young racing résumé.
Competing in the 13-14 age class, Willard covered the 1,500 meters in 4:39 to capture the state AAU meet in Hampton. He raced 1,600 meters in 4:43 to claim the state USATF title at Matoaca.
Willard also won the Chesterfield Middle School League 1,600 this past spring in 4:55. - Fred Jeter
