INDIANAPOLIS - Troy Dumais appears headed for his third Olympics. Mark Ruiz likely will have to settle for two.

Dumais, who has declared that his goal for Beijing is "gold or go home," put on a dominating display in the semifinals of the 3-meter springboard at the U.S. Olympic diving trials last night.

Already spotted a 30-point lead because of his international success, Dumais scored perfect 10s on three of his six dives to build a commanding advantage with 1038.30 points. Chris Colwill was second at 961.00.

Ruiz, who retired after the 2004 Olympics but returned to the board nine months ago, was a respectable sixth in the afternoon preliminaries. But he plunged to 11th when a rusty, sloppy performance left him at 742.80, ahead of only one other diver heading today's final.

"Qualifying for the Olympics is not what I'm going for," said Dumais, who competed for the U.S. at both Sydney and Athens. "I have to set that aside. Yes, qualifying and going through the rounds, doing all that stuff, is an important piece of the puzzle. But if I can't make it to the Olympics, then I can't win gold. So it's gold or go home for me."

The 28-year-old native of Ventura, Calif., finished sixth on springboard at the last two Olympics.

Judge says Gatlin should compete in trials

Banned sprinter Justin Gatlin finally won a round in his bid to defend his 100-meter title at the Beijing Olympics. His chances of ultimate success, though, still faced significant, perhaps insurmountable, obstacles.

A Florida federal judge ruled that Gatlin should be allowed to compete at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, which begin June 27 in Eugene, Ore.

U.S. District Judge Lacey A. Collier's temporary restraining order is in effect for 10 days at present. The first two rounds of the 100-meter qualifying are set for June 28. The semifinals and finals are the following day.

Joe Zarzaur, Gatlin's third attorney in his dogged attempts at reinstatement, said his client is "guardedly, cautiously optimistic" but added the judge could change the decision.

A Monday hearing in Pensacola has been set to discuss the order, and Gatlin is expected to attend.

Yesterday's order, like Gatlin's appeal to CAS, centers on the 26-year-old's first doping offense - a positive test for amphetamines at the 2001 junior nationals. The substance was part of medication Gatlin was taking for attention deficit disorder.

Canadian track team to miss ceremony

TORONTO - The Canadian track and field team will skip the opening ceremony for the Beijing Games because of the Olympic schedule, as well as concerns about pollution, traffic and access to training.

The Canadian athletes will be training in Singapore when the Summer Olympics open Aug. 8 in Beijing, seven days before track and field events begin. The Australian track and field team is taking a similar approach, staying in Hong Kong until a few days before scheduled events.
