North Carolina knocks off LSU 8-4

OMAHA, Neb. -- Alex White kept LSU's potent offense mostly under wraps for seven-plus innings and Kyle Seager, Seth Williams and Ryan Graepel had three hits apiece to lead North Carolina to an 8-4 victory over the Tigers in the College World Series last night.

White gave up home runs to Michael Hollander and Matt Clark leading off the first and second innings, then allowed only two singles the rest of the way. The Tar Heels (52-12), the national runner-up the past two years, advanced to a game tomorrow night against upstart Fresno State, which stunned Rice 17-5 yesterday afternoon. The Tigers (48-18-1) will play Rice in a Bracket 2 elimination game tomorrow.

U.S. wins big in World Cup qualifying

CARSON, Calif. -- A record-setting rout began when Clint Dempsey scored 53 seconds in, and when it was over, the United States had opened qualifying for the 2010 World Cup with an 8-0 victory over Barbados. Dempsey and Brian Ching scored two goals apiece, Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley and Eddie Johnson each had one, and Barbados' Daryl Ferguson had an own goal.

The only other time the United States scored this many goals was in an 8-1 victory over the Cayman Islands in 1993. The Americans had 7-0 wins against El Salvador in 1993 and Barbados in a 2000 qualifier.

Mexico defeats Belize 2-0

HOUSTON -- Jared Borgetti scored on a penalty kick during stoppage time to help Mexico outlast Belize 2-0 in the second round of World Cup qualifying, Carlos Vela took a deflection off a missed shot by Luis Perez and kicked it in from 2 yards out for the game's first goal in the 66th minute. In other soccer:

  • Paraguay survived being down a man and beat Brazil 2-0 in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, propelling the small South American country to the top of the standings. Roque Santa Cruz scored in the 25th minute off a corner kick. Salvador Cabanas added a goal in the 48th minute when Santa Cruz was stopped following a sprint from midfield. Cabanas capitalized on the rebound.
  • Nihat Kahveci scored twice in the final three minutes as Turkey beat the Czech Republic 3-2 to reach the Euro 2008 soccer quarterfinals for a second time. . . . Hakan Yakin provided all the scoring in Switzerland's 2-0 against already-qualified Portugal.

    TENNIS

    Federer collects 10th grass crown

    HALLE, Germany -- Roger Federer won his 10th title on grass to match Pete Sampras' total, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4 in the Gerry Weber Open final. Federer ran his record unbeaten run on grass to 59 matches. Kohlschreiber hit a backhand into the net after a long rally to end the match in 73 minutes, giving Federer his 55th career title.

    The top-ranked Swiss restored some confidence after one of his worst defeats -- a rout in the French Open final last Sunday at the hands of rival Rafael Nadal. Federer took just four games on the red clay at Roland Garros Stadium.

    VanDam wins Bassmaster event

    GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. -- Kevin VanDam won the Bassmaster Elite Series' Bluegrass Brawl at Kentucky Lake for his 14th BASS victory, hauling in 16 pounds, 9 ounces to hold off Tim Horton. VanDam, who took over the angler season series lead, finished with a four-day total of 81-13. He won by just a pound over Horton, who hauled in 24-11 yesterday to make it close.

    G. Edwards prevails at Langley

    HAMPTON -- Greg Edwards held off a challenge from his brother, Danny Edwards Jr., to win the rain-shortened Late Model Stock Car feature Saturday night, his second victory of the season at Langley Speedway in Hampton. Edwards started from the pole and was leading when rain halted the race with 93 laps completed.

    Cash captures checkered flag

    SOUTH BOSTON -- Jonathan Cash prevailed in the 150-lap Late Model Stock Car feature at South Boston Speedway yesterday, his second victory of the season. Cash edged runner-up Deac McCaskill in a two-lap sprint to the finish.

  • The Florida Highway Patrol says former Marshall football standout Johnathan Goddard died early Sunday from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in northern Florida on Saturday evening. Mr. Goddard was the Mid-American Conference defensive player of the year in 2004, when he led the nation with 16 sacks and 28 tackles for loss. Mr. Goddard was selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL draft. He later played briefly for the Indianapolis Colts and the Arena Football League's Colorado Crush.
