Tuckahoe LL celebrates No. 50

All together now, "Happy birthday to you . . . "

What better birthday combination? Balloons, cake and baseball.

Tuckahoe Little League has turned 50 years old and plans to celebrate Sunday. The shindig will start with an open house and six boys and girls championship games.

From 2-6 p.m., the Tuckahoe Board Room will be open to the public with a display of a half century of memorabilia.

At 5:30, on the Guedri Memorial Field, there will be proclamation from Henrico County, the announcement of the league's sportsmanship award recipients and introduction of the all-star teams.

Mawyer, Smith power Plumbright

Chad Mawyer and Adam Smith earned all-tournament honors in helping Plumbright to a third-place finish in the 33-team Beast of the East silver division.

Richmond East Moose took second in the 41-team bronze division and dedicated their efforts to the memory of fellow players Jo Jo Owens and Richard Lowery, who lost their lives Memorial Day weekend.

In the home-run contest, Jo Jo Goldsmith of Team Moose won the event by belting nine homers in 12 swings in the final.

Former Freeman star Andrew Sylvia dies

Andrew Sylvia, a former baseball and football standout at Douglas Freeman High, passed away earlier this month following a short illness.

Mr. Sylvia, Freeman Class of '91, was a football quarterback and baseball pitcher for the Rebels. He was living on the Outer Banks, N.C., at the time of his death.

Hopewell resident signs with Lancers

Hopewell resident Martiz Washington has signed a scholarship to play basketball for Longwood University. The 6-0, 180-pound guard was an all-Virginia Independent Schools (VIS) and all-Prep League performer at Christchurch School.

Leading Christchurch to a 25-8 record, Washington averaged 18.4 points, 5.4 assists, 4.6 steals, 4.5 rebounds and hit 43 percent from of his 3-point attempts. -- Fred Jeter
