The Virginia women's rowing team advanced all three of its boats yesterday during the first day of competition at the NCAA women's rowing championships on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
Virginia's varsity four (coxswain Cristine Candland, Diane Leigh, Allison Brennan, Nora Phillips and Schafer Bomstein) won its heat and advanced to tomorrow's grand final. The Cavaliers finished with a time of 7:27.07.
The varsity eight (coxswain Caitlin Mixter, Jennifer Cromwell, Rebecca Ryall, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Desiree Burns, Augusta Stratos, Bridget Wandelt, Katrin Sydlik) finished second in its heat, and advanced to today's semifinals.
The crew led most of its race, but was edged in the last 250 meters by California. Virginia's time was 6:24.95, compared to Cal's 6:23.79.
The second varsity eight (coxswain Mary Eddy, Amanda Chase, Lauren Shook, Helen Tompkins, Marie Long, Claudia Blandford, Annie Bohlen, Adrienne Egge and Victoria Burke) had a third-place finish and advanced to the repechage today.

Hokies golfer 27th after shooting 73
Virginia Tech's Jurrian van der Vaart shot a 1-over 73 in the third round of the NCAA men's championships in West Lafayette, Ind., and is tied for 27th overall.
Play was suspended for 40 minutes and ultimately suspended for the day at 5:55 p.m. Van der Vaart, who had an early tee time, completed his third round.
The University of Virginia did not finish its round because of storms. Play will resume today at 7 a.m.
The Cavaliers were in 28th place with a score of 22-over par when play stopped. Will Collins and Greg Carlin both stood at 3-over for the day. Collins had completed 12 holes and Carlin 13. Amory Davis was 7-over after 14 holes, Steven Rojas was at 9-over through 14 and Kyle Stough was at 13-over after the 11th hole.
Stough entered the day in 17th place after shooting 4-over for the first two days of the tournament.
First round co-leader UCLA moved back into the lead at the suspension of play, shooting 10-over-par 298 for a 54-hole total of 888, three strokes ahead of Southern California and second-round leader Clemson.
The tournament concludes today with the top-15 teams and top-six individuals not on advancing teams playing for the title.
