TULSA, Okla. -- Top-seeded Virginia advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year with a 4-0 victory over No. 16 Michigan in a round of 16 match yesterday, a school-record 31st win this season.
The Cavaliers (31-0) jumped ahead early as Houston Barrick and Sanam Singh cruised to an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Chris Madden and George Navas. Dominic Inglot and Michael Shabaz broke a 4-4 tie with Wolverines Jason Jung and Mike Scroczynski by winning the last four games to score an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles and clinch the opening point.
Virginia took control in singles, winning five of the six first sets. Inglot put the score at 2-0 with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Andrew Mazlin at No. 3 singles, and Shabaz made the score 3-0 after posting a 6-3, 6-3 win over Madden at No. 5 singles. Treat Huey clinched the match for the Cavaliers with his 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jung in the No.2 spot.
Virgini will face the winner of the Tennessee-Baylor match in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. In other men's NCAA play:
Loden and Murata defeated Randy Lofgren and Kevin Newman of Denison, 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the round of 16. They will contniue their play today at Bates College.
WOMEN
SAINT PETER, Minn. -- Washington and Lee's Lauren Caire advanced to the quarterfinals of both the NCAA Division III singles and doubles championships.
Caire will take on Williams' Grace Baljon in the quarterfinals of the individual championship this morning, and she and teammate Katie Tabb, the doubles bracket's second seed, will compete this afternoon against the winner of the Wellesley and Carnegie Mellon match.
MEN'S GOLF
BRASELTON, Ga. -- Washington and Lee carded a final round score of 308 and finished 16th out of 35 teams at the NCAA Division III championships.
Nathaniel James finished with and eight-over score of 73-74-72-73--292, and tied for third with Wesley's Will Carborough.
