Virginia Tech to host Group AAA football

The Virginia High School League Group AAA championship football games in December are moving to Virginia Tech.

The Division 5 and 6 finals will be played at Lane Stadium on Dec. 6. The Division 5 game is tentatively set for noon, followed by Division 6 at 4:30 p.m.

The University of Virginia was the host site last fall.

Liberty University will continue to play host to the Group AA, Division 3 and 4 championship games. Salem Football Stadium is the venue for the Group A, Division 1 and 2 finals.

Football practice can begin as early as July 28 depending on a school's schedule.

The VHSL Executive Committee also voted on a schedule for the state basketball tournaments at the Siegel Center. Following the lead of Group A last year, Group AA will split into division play this season. Semifinals and finals are at the Siegel Center. Six games will be played each day of the tournament, March 10-14.

Wildcats' Odell passes milestone

Deep Run baseball coach Grant Odell passed the 200-victory milestone April 23 when the Wildcats, who were the state runners-up last year, defeated J.R. Tucker 9-3.

Odell coached at Matoaca before coming to Deep Run to start the program in 2002.

Deep Run has forfeited its nondistrict victory over Henrico on April 30. One of the Wildcats' pitchers worked more than 10 innings in a two-day period, which is against the rules.

Brown takes over as Monarchs coach

Former assistant coach Ksaan Brown is the boys basketball coach at Meadowbrook High. Brown replaces John B. Gordon III, who stepped down to go in to school administration.

"I'm happy for the opportunity and don't want to mess it up," Brown said.

Brown said he would be less visible than Gordon, but more vocal. The Monarchs return 10 players, and three members of Gordon's coaching staff will stay on with Brown.
