Sophomore Roslyn Presley, who helped Petersburg's Appomattox Regional Governors School reach a state quarterfinal last season, yesterday made the first unit of The Associated Press all-Group A girls basketball team.

The 5-10 Presley averaged 25.5 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks. She scored 31 points in a loss to Division 1 state champion Buffalo Gap in the state quarterfinals.

Brittany Avanacini, a 5-8 junior who led Floyd County to the state title, was named player of the year. She scored 31 points in the state semifinals against George Mason and 31 more in the Division 2 final against Lancaster.

On a unit selected by high school writers around the state, Presley and Avanacini were joined by senior Jenny Logan of Luray, junior Ashley Buckhannon of George Wythe-Wytheville and Kelly Rasnick of Ervinton.

The coach of the year is Alan Cantrell, who led Floyd County to a 26-3 record and his fourth state title - three with girls.

Millbrook's Green,
Mankins honored

First came the championship, and now, the awards.

Erick Green of Millbrook, who scored 18 points in the Pioneers' victory against Brunswick that gave them their first state title, has been selected as The Associated Press Group AA boys player of the year and his coach, Scott Mankins, was chosen as the top coach.

Green, a 6-2 junior, averaged 18.5 points, 3 assists and 2.9 steals for the Pioneers. He scored 19 in an overtime victory in the state semifinals against Blacksburg.

The Pioneers finished 29-1 and on a 15-game winning streak, in part because Mankins switched defenses in the championship game, leading to 11 scoreless minutes for Brunswick. The Pioneers went from trailing 15-11 to leading 22-17 on their way to a 53-43 victory.

The first team also includes senior Jeff Early of Rockbridge County, juniors Ben Boggs of Hidden Valley and Logan Thomas of Brookville and sophomore Josh Hairston of Courtland.
