Buzzie Bavasi dies at 93

LOS ANGELES - Buzzie Bavasi, who built Dodgers teams that won four World Series titles in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, died Thursday at his home in La Jolla, outside San Diego. He was 93. His death was announced by the Seattle Mariners, whose general manager is Bill Bavasi, a son of the former Dodgers GM.

"Buzzie was one of the game's greatest front office executives during a period that spanned parts of six different decades," baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said. "He loved the game, and he loved talking about it."

Emil Joseph Bavasi - nicknamed Buzzie by his mother for the way he buzzed around as a kid - helped put together Dodgers teams included future Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese, Roy Campanella, Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale.

As an executive in the Dodgers' minorleague system, he helped Robinson, Campanella and Don Newcombe through their often difficult integration into professional baseball. Robinson went on to break the major-league color barrier.

Toms leads Mickelson by a shot

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - David Toms carded a 5-under 67 to take the first-round lead in the Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club. Playing in the morning when the greens were still soft from the drenching rain earlier in the week, Toms made eight birdies, including a near ace at the 13th hole, to take a one-shot lead over Phil Mickelson and Jason Bohn.

It was a welcome change for the 2001 PGA Championship winner, whose most recent victory was more than two years ago. Swinging too hard two months ago at the Match Play Championship caused a disk problem to flare up. He followed that withdrawal with two missed cuts while on pain medication, shot an 80 in the final round of the Masters, and tied for 61st at the Verizon Heritage.

BURLINGTON, Ky. - A woman has accused Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Ahmad Brooks of punching her in the face last month. Brooks was ordered to appear June 6 in Boone District Court on a complaint filed this week by Destiny Rosich. Based on the complaint, prosecutors charged Brooks with fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor that carries up to a year in prison. Brooks played three seasons at Virginia before being kicked off the team. In other NFL news:

  • Former Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Darrion Scott has been arrested after police searched his Eden Prairie, Minn., residence. Police say Scott, 26, was booked into the Hennepin County jail Wednesday on suspicion of assault and malicious punishment of a child. He is a free agent after spending the past four seasons with the Vikings.

    SuperSonics to retain Carlesimo

BELLEVUE, Wash. - Sonics coach P.J. Carlesimo will return next season, the team said, ending speculation he would be fired after the team won just 20 games in his first year with the Sonics. General Manager Sam Presti said at a news conference that Carlesimo would be back. Two weeks ago, Presti gave only a vague answer when asked if there would be any coaching staff changes, Carlesimo included.

Jones' partners aim to keep medals

WASHINGTON - Seven of Marion Jones' relay partners filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport seeking to retain their 2000 Olympic medals. Jones was stripped of her medals last year after admitting to doping during the Sydney Games. Last month, the International Olympic Committee disqualified her seven relay partners, conceding none of the athletes broke any rules.

Jones teamed with Jearl-Miles Clark, Monique Hennagan, LaTasha Colander-Clark and Andrea Anderson to win gold in the 1,600-meter relay, and with Chryste Gaines, Torri Edwards, Passion Richardson and Nanceen Perry to win the bronze in the 400. Perry is not a part of the lawsuit.

  • A nonprofit group that hands out the Butkus Award to the nation's top college linebacker will stop presenting it after a yearlong legal battle with the hall of famer. Dick Butkus sued in Los Angeles federal court in 2007, demanding the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando relinquish control of the Butkus Award, which it had given out for 23 years and trademarked in 1987. He said the club didn't raise enough money for charity and in April won a summary judgment.
