DINWIDDIE 49, MATOACA 21

The red band on Adam Morgan's right arm stretches almost from his wrist to his elbow. A blue band occupies similar space on the left arm of Dinwiddie High's quarterback.

Combined, the bands contain something in the vicinity of 180 plays. Morgan says probably 120 call for him to put the ball in the air in the Generals' pass-happy scheme.

"We didn't pull 'em all out," he said after Dinwiddie passed by homestanding Matoaca in an important 49-21 Central District victory last night, "but we used a lot of them."

Swing passes out of the backfield. Quick screens. Quick outs. Slants. Crossing routes. Bombs.

All were on display for a team ranked ninth in the T-D Top 10 poll but seeking legitimacy after several down years. The Generals (1-0, 4-0) got it against eighth-ranked Matoaca (0-1, 1-3), which had won the past two district titles.

"This was a turning point," Morgan said. "We showed'em Dinwiddie's no joke anymore."

A 6-0, 185-pound junior, Morgan completed 19 of 28 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 10 consecutive in the first half and was 13 of 15 -- one incompletion was thrown away -- with three TDs as the Generals scored on five consecutive possessions to erase an early deficit.

"We were like butter. We were on a roll," Morgan said. "I kept hitting [Dequan] Coles and [Jerrell] White and [Wilkie] Cox and [Sam] Haskins. There was great blocking by the line. They were really busting it tonight."

Coles had 126 yards on six catches and two TDs, including a 69-yard bomb. White had four catches for 17 yards and a TD, carried the ball three times for 24 yards and had a 67-yard kickoff return. Cox, a running back, took swing pass after swing pass and finished with 101 yards and a TD on eight catches.

"Our screens are like our running game," said Cox, who added 44 yards rushing.

Morgan, who will take an unofficial visit to Virginia today, has thrown for 962 yards and 14 touchdowns in four games. He's been intercepted four times.

"I knew from the minute he stepped on the field as a freshman, as bad as things were, as young and as weak and as small as we were, he brought us a spark, a fire," Mills said. "We were still getting beat, but we were competing.

"He throws a great ball. He's a tireless worker. He does all the little things to make himself better. It's easy to call plays when you've got a kid like that back there."

Matoaca got 189 yards rushing from Jamar Parham, but much of that came after the game no longer was in doubt. The Warriors suffered five turnovers and some costly personal fouls.

"It's a deadly combination: a great offense plus inexperience on [our side] on defense," said Matoaca coach Pat Manuel, whose team is replacing nine defenders.

"We're being forced to grow up under Friday night lights. We're making critical mistakes at the wrong time. Sometimes we look really good. Sometimes we don't."
