In the following list, some properties are designated independent-living retirement communities. These are usually either ageor income-restricted communities, or parts of larger communities designed for senior living. Independent-living communities usually do not offer medical care, meals or help with activities such as dressing.

Those who need such services can find them at assisted-living facilities. Some assisted-living facilities also offer therapeutic programs such as physical rehabilitation.

In addition, some communities are considered CCRCs: continuing care retirement communities. These "life-care communities" provide a range of living options in one community from independent living to assisted living to around-the-clock nursing care. The level of care at which a resident can enter a CCRC depends on the community. Several accept new residents at only the independent-living stage.

Both CCRCs and assisted-living facilities may require contracts and entrance fees.
