Injured veterans need a "no wrong door" way to access help when they return from combat, say experts, veterans and others who attended a statewide conference last year.

The Virginia Department of Veterans Services has released a report on the Oct. 17 meeting in Richmond and scheduled a follow-up conference at Fort Monroe in Hampton for March 26.

"What we want to do is take these recommendations . . . to the regions" and determine how to enact them, said Anne Atkins, spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.

The seven recommendations are:

  • Recognize the impact of deployment on military service personnel and their families;
  • Eliminate stigma associated with combat/operational stress injuries;
  • Reach and connect with veterans and their families;
  • Build a service-delivery infrastructure;
  • Make health care accessible;
  • House veterans and prevent homelessness; and
  • Hire veterans.
