Don't Go!

It's hardly surprising that other cities are courting Richmond Police Chief Rodney Monroe. The chief has built a remarkable record here -- and done so with class, grit, and grace. Monroe and his officers have taken a big bite out of one of the city's most devastating and chronic problems. When many believed crime could never be collared in Richmond, Monroe led the charge that proved them wrong.

Now, he is a top contender for the chief's job in Charlotte, N.C. We understand Monroe's desire for a new challenge, the allure of leading a larger police force. But we refuse to believe he would find Charlotte as charming -- or as interesting -- as Richmond.

We use the term hero advisedly and rarely. But it applies to Chief Monroe. As he ponders the next turn in his law-enforcement career, Richmonders -- both in the city and the counties -- should give him something else to consider: our gratitude, our respect, and our deep desire that he not leave us.

A public outpouring might influence his decision. So call, write, e-mail. The theme is a simple one: Please don't go, Chief Monroe!
