"Change is the only constant.
"Hanging on is the only sin."
U.S. race-car driver Denise McCluggage made this comment in an interview with WomenSports magazine in 1977, but these are words we live with every day at the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Over the past several months on these pages, different editors have written about the transformation taking place in the news industry. While we are challenged to increase the number of paid subscriptions in a perceived era of free content, we still have a solid base of more than 170,000 who choose to buy the paper every day. Many more read copies passed along from other folks.
But more and more, our longtime readers and new readers are going online throughout the day to get their news and information. To meet readers where they are, earlier this year we created a Continuous News Desk that publishes online first, then comes back with fuller stories in the newspaper.
We hear from people that they don't have time to read the paper -- and they really hate all those dead trees filling up the recycling bin. They still want local news and information, but it's all overwhelming. We also hear from people who love the printed paper and some others who would like nothing more than to return to the good old days of a morning and afternoon newspaper.
But the realities are that higher costs for things such as newsprint and a recession that is limiting advertising revenues are prompting us to change and let go of some of the old ways.
So, we're going to streamline things a bit starting next week. We're going to keep what you tell us is most important -- local news and advertising information -- and add more of what you say you like to read -- food, and home and gardening information, stories about local people, events and happenings around town, and occasional surprising stories that entertain and sometimes astound us all.
We'll continue to pursue the accountability and watchdog reporting you've come to count on from us.
We're going to write and edit routine stories tighter so "just the facts" is more efficient, and we will add space for stories of significance that require more context and explanation -- for example, coverage of the shootings at Virginia Tech and our series of stories and photos detailing conditions at the Richmond City Jail.
Business and sports news continue to be important to all of us, and we'll continue doing our best with those sections. Our Classified sections will have new front pages that focus on a specific shopping or merchandise theme.
. . .
In our streamlining, we've moved some features and sections and eliminated others that have lower readership.
A few of the big changes that take effect next week:
On Mondays, we'll have one news section that incorporates local, national and international news. You'll also find obituaries and the Opinion pages there.
There will be no Flair section on Monday, Tuesday or Friday, but some of the stories that would have appeared there will run in other sections. We're moving Home & Garden to Thursday and Weekend to Friday. And Weekend will look like the other broadsheet sections of the newspaper instead of being in tabloid size.
The Explore section on Thursday will be eliminated, but we're taking some of the science and nature components and repackaging them with other content into a wrap we'll call Discover.
We're taking the things that appear every day in Flair sections and putting them together in a wrap we call Fun & Games. This is where you'll find all the comics -- most of which will now be in color -- as well as puzzles and TV grids. The Back Page features will be here, too -- the horoscope, Dear Abby, Dr. Donohue, a people column and other fun items from that page. This new section will wrap around the Sports section Monday through Saturday.
We're also recasting the weather map to keep it firmly focused on the region. We're moving it to Page A2 every day, where it joins Today in History, the lottery numbers and a feature we're calling "New on inRich.com," which will highlight some of the exciting news and features awaiting you on our Web site. The information on tides and water conditions is moving to Sports.
We're renaming the Classified advertising section as "Find" and focusing on a different topic each day. Monday is services, Tuesday is pets, Wednesday is jobs, Thursday is deals, Friday is cars, and Saturday is homes.
. . .
We've tried hard to include something special every day, a destination within the newspaper, if you will.
Monday features the news "super section," a sports section with the Fun & Games wrap, Metro Business, the Find / Services (Classified) section and the Ukrop's circular. For the front page, we've developed a newsy, entertaining look at the week ahead we're calling "Getting Started."
Tuesday features the Discover wrap, which teams up some practical science material and other stories with the Mini Page. It wraps around the local news section, which includes obituaries and business news as usual. The A-section includes national and world news and the Opinion pages as usual. Fun & Games wraps around Sports, and Find / Pets is a separate Classified section.
Wednesday's big destination is an expanded Food section. We'll add features and stories related to preparing meals at home, grocery shopping, dining out and healthy eating/living. The main news and local news sections continue as they did on Tuesday. Fun & Games wraps around Sports, and Find / Jobs is a separate Classified section.
Thursday is the day to begin planning your weekend projects at home. We're expanding the Home & Garden section and adding features to help you maintain and improve your living space, whether it be an apartment or a mansion. The main and local news sections continue as they did on Wednesday. Fun & Games wraps around Sports, and Find / Deals is a separate Classified section.
Friday is all about the weekend, so we're moving Weekend and its popular features here. The main news and local news sections continue as on Thursday. Fun & Games wraps around Sports, and Find / Cars is a separate Classified section.
Saturday, finally, a day off for most folks. We've expanded the Fun & Games wrap to focus on the missions of a day off: shop, eat, play. The main news and local news sections continue as on Friday. There's a Sports section, and Find / Homes is a separate Classified section. TD Channels continues to offer a week's worth of TV listings.
Sunday, our biggest paper and our biggest day for readership, will remain unchanged, though the weather map will be in its new location on Page A2.
. . .
This is a lot of change -- it is for us, too. But in order to stay competitive, we feel these changes are essential. We need to run our business more efficiently so we can pursue our journalism more robustly.
These changes start with the paper of next Monday, May 12, and between now and then, we'll have several pieces explaining in more detail how things will be different. Take a look at the whole lineup and let us know what you think. As we share information, we'll include the name and contact information for people here who would be glad to answer any questions you have.
