Yesterday this space discussed Rep. Eric Cantor's potential as a running mate for John McCain. Yesterday's front page and inRich.com reported breaking news that Barack Obama was "screening" Tim Kaine as a possible vice presidential candidate on the Democratic ticket. The Kaine buzz continued for a second day, which might set the longevity record for these things.
Ken Kachigian has advised Republicans for many years. In a Wall Street Journal column, he recently urged John McCain to "pick someone you know." Kachigian explained that running mates seldom have a decisive positive impact on the campaign. "Voters don't select the main course based on the side dish." If the vice presidential candidates generate headlines during the campaign's closing weeks it probably will be for the wrong reasons. So, Kachigian says, the presidential nominees should select someone they know, someone they trust.
The advice presumably would apply to Democrats as well as to Republicans. And Kaine would meet that standard for Obama.
Although he cuts an appealing figure, Kaine lacks an extensive résumé. He has no formal experience in national security. According to the polls, Obama's trip to Iraq and Afghanistan did not overcome public concerns about his qualifications for commander-in-chief. Kaine would not help in that regard. Virginia's governor would complement Obama's generational message, however. Kaine campaigned early and eagerly for Obama. His decision to endorse the Illinois senator suggests political acumen. Virginia is considered a battleground. Kaine has been a solid governor, yet boasts few accomplishments appropriate for a national profile.
Eric Cantor for veep?
Tim Kaine for veep?
Would it be possible for Virginia to hop aboard two bandwagons?
