Vice President Cantor? Not That Anti-Family Man
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Rep. Eric Cantor is being considered as a candidate for vice president on the Republican ticket. He has been described with a number of attributes, including "pro-family." However, his recent voting record in the House of Representatives might suggest otherwise. He voted "No" on a bill expanding nutrition programs such as food stamps, funding fruit and vegetable programs, and promoting conservation. Cantor voted "No" to legislation calling on coal-fired power plants and other smokestack industries to install the best available pollution-control technology whenever they upgrade a facility.
Cantor voted "No" on a bill to revamp the Section 8 voucher program that helps 2 million poor families pay for rental housing. He voted "No" to allowing soldiers as much time back home as at war. He voted "No" to renewing community service programs such as the Civilian Community Corps, Volunteers in Service to America, Senior Corps, and AmeriCorps.
This is a small sample of Cantor's negative votes regarding bills that might be of benefit to families. A man who might be a heartbeat away from the presidency needs a more positive attitude toward his constituents.
In addition, Cantor voted to allow the import of polar bear parts, indicating that he believes killing endangered animals for trophies is okay. Is this vice presidential?
Miles F. Johnson. Henrico.
